UFC Champ Tom Aspinall Opens Up on Confidence Struggle

UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall revealed that his confidence has taken a significant hit following his fight with Ciryl Gane in October at UFC 321. The bout, held in the Octagon, was halted in the first round after Aspinall was accidentally poked in the eye, resulting in a no contest decision and subsequent eye surgeries for the champion.

Details Surrounding the Cancelled Title Defense

Aspinall, with a professional record now standing at 15 wins and 3 losses, was defending his title against Gane (13-1) when the unexpected eye injury forced the stoppage. Since the incident, he has been gradually returning to light training, though there is no confirmed date for when he might compete again. The unexpected interruption and injury have left the champion questioning his confidence and place in the sport.

Champion’s Disappointment Over UFC President’s Remarks

Following the incident, Aspinall expressed frustration with UFC president Dana White’s comments, which suggested that the British fighter was reluctant to continue the fight and downplayed the severity of his injury. Aspinall strongly rejected this characterization, emphasizing his lifelong commitment to fighting.

“I mean, how can your confidence not take a knock? You work your whole life for something, and someone can just spin it on you that [I] just didn’t want to carry on,”

Aspinall told reporters.

“I’ve had millions of fights; I’ve been fighting since I was eight years old. That is not the case.”

New Partnership Aimed at Confidence Recovery

Recognizing the need to rebuild his mental strength, Aspinall has joined forces with Eddie Hearn and the Matchroom Talent Agency, hoping the new management will support him through this challenging period. He admitted the confidence issue is something he must work on.

I need to work on that [confidence] a little bit, and I feel like Eddie [Hearn] and the team are going to help with that. So that’s why I’ve come with them.

Clarifying Intentions Behind New Management Role

Aspinall made it clear that his decision to partner with Hearn is unrelated to any tensions with Dana White or the UFC. Instead, it stems from a desire to receive proper support and representation within the sport, not to settle scores or create conflict.

This is not like point-scoring stuff for me,

Aspinall said.

“This is me wanting to get what I think I’m worth. And if I can work with people who I like and they’re going to help me, I will absolutely take it. No, this isn’t me getting back at anyone or anything like that.”

He also noted the lack of a personal relationship with White, explaining that communication between fighters and the UFC president is typically handled through UFC executive Hunter Campbell.

“Dana’s not spoken to me. To be honest, as far as I’m aware, or at least from my experience, UFC fighters don’t really have a personal relationship with Dana. We go through Hunter Campbell. I don’t think it’s really [White’s] job to reach out, but, no, I’ve not spoken to him personally,”

Aspinall said.

What Lies Ahead for Aspinall in the UFC

With his physical recovery underway and a renewed focus on restoring his confidence, Tom Aspinall’s path back to the Octagon remains uncertain. His new alliance with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom could provide the necessary guidance to navigate the challenges ahead, both in terms of career management and mental fortitude. Aspinall’s experience and status as heavyweight champion make his comeback highly anticipated by fans and analysts alike, marking his recovery as a significant moment for the UFC heavyweight division.
