Paulo Costa Ready to Face Khamzat Chimaev in Two Divisions

Brazilian fighter Paulo Costa is advancing to the light heavyweight division but remains focused on challenging current UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev. The mutual animosity between Costa and Chimaev has only intensified their desire to settle their feud in the octagon.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Costa discussed his plans to launch his product, Secret Juice, following his upcoming fight. When asked whether his rival Chimaev might be trying the product, Costa dismissed the idea harshly.

“I don’t think so. I think he is looking fatty. Fat a*s. This guy does deserve secret juice. Secret juice is for nice people. He is not nice.” – Paulo Costa

Costa is scheduled to fight the undefeated Azamat Murzakanov on April 11 at UFC 327. After this bout, Costa intends to defeat Murzakanov decisively before turning his full attention to a fight with Chimaev.

Willing to Compete at Both Middleweight and Light Heavyweight for Chimaev Matchup

During the same discussion with Helwani, Costa revealed his openness to face Khamzat Chimaev in either the middleweight (185 pounds) or light heavyweight (205 pounds) division. He emphasized his commitment to the matchup regardless of the weight class.

“I’ve always made it public that I want to fight him [Khamzat Chimaev]. It’s about UFC. If UFC wants to make that fight one day, I’m ready. He’s a champion right now. I think after a good victory against Azamat on April 11, I can come back at middleweight to be in line to fight him, or I can wait for him at 205. I can fight him in both divisions. I think I’m going to enjoy 205, but I’m not closed to 185.” – Paulo Costa

At 34 years old, Costa is determined to finally face Chimaev and deliver a tough challenge.

“I think the worst match for Chimaev is me… This needs to happen [Costa vs Chimaev]. He is my goal. I am sick of him. I hope very soon we can fight.” – Paulo Costa

Khamzat Chimaev’s Title Defense and Future Plans

Khamzat Chimaev claimed the UFC middleweight championship last year and is anticipated to defend his title following Ramadan. Potential challengers include Nassourdine Imavov or Sean Strickland as Chimaev prepares to solidify his reign in the division.

Chimaev has expressed intentions to defend his middleweight belt once before moving up to light heavyweight, aiming to become a two-division champion, which coincides with Costa’s willingness to compete in both weight classes.

Implications for UFC’s Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Divisions

The brewing rivalry between Paulo Costa and Khamzat Chimaev carries significant weight for the UFC’s middleweight and light heavyweight ranks. Costa’s flexible approach to fighting in either division increases the chances of the fight materializing, which could reignite intense competition for both belts.

If the contest happens, it would pit Chimaev’s dynamic championship status against Costa’s aggressive style and determination to prove himself across divisions. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely, anticipating a major event that could shift the division landscapes significantly.
