Topuria Accuses Makhachev of Ducking White House Fight

UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has publicly accused Islam Makhachev of avoiding a potential bout between them scheduled for the UFC White House event. This confrontation comes ahead of Topuria’s title defense against Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250.

Originally, there were strong indications that Topuria would move up to the welterweight division to challenge Makhachev, but that matchup reportedly fell through due to an injury sustained by Makhachev. With that fight off the table, Topuria is now fully focused on his upcoming clash with Gaethje, attempting to continue his impressive streak after victories over opponents such as Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira.

Topuria’s Frustration With Makhachev’s Injury Claim

In a recent tweet, Topuria expressed his irritation with what he perceives as a convenient excuse from Makhachev’s camp. He claims he always expected to be part of the White House card, despite some UFC doubts during negotiations.

“Once again Islam comes up with an excuse. This time it’s an injury. I always knew I would be part of the White House event. Even when the UFC told me at one point that they wouldn’t count on me for the event, I knew it was part of the negotiation,”

Topuria wrote.

He further explained that after being assured he would be on the card, the confirmation came that Makhachev was injured, which led to Gaethje being named as his new opponent.

Topuria’s Message to Gaethje and Makhachev

Topuria’s remarks grew more intense when addressing both Makhachev and Gaethje, suggesting that Gaethje had stepped in to avoid Makhachev’s “escape.”

Once again, someone else who will pay for Islam’s escape. Both of their manager is a bitch and also ugly as hell. Justin, see you at the White House. I’m not someone who humiliates people. It will be quick. When you wake up, everything will already be over.

— Ilia Topuria, UFC Lightweight Champion

His strong words reveal a hardened mindset, as Topuria prepares to face Gaethje and aims to deliver a definitive performance in the Octagon.

Implications for the UFC Lightweight Division

The uncertainty surrounding the Makhachev versus Topuria fight highlights ongoing challenges in scheduling high-profile bouts within the UFC. Makhachev’s injury and subsequent withdrawal could affect momentum in the lightweight and welterweight divisions. Meanwhile, Topuria’s determination to maintain his winning streak against a seasoned fighter like Gaethje could significantly impact the division’s landscape.

If Topuria secures a victory, it may increase pressure on Makhachev to confront him once he recovers, potentially setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown in the future. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely as this rivalry intensifies, shaping the trajectory of top-tier UFC lightweight competition.
