Paso Robles Unveils Game-Changing Pickleball Courts at Sherwood Park

Pickleball Courts at Sherwood Park: Paso Robles city leaders and residents gathered on Wednesday, March 26, at Sherwood Park to celebrate the groundbreaking of a major improvement project. The upgrades will include seven lighted pickleball courts, new restrooms, a barbecue area, and a larger parking lot, with completion expected in 2026.

Community Celebrates Start of Major Park Upgrades

Mayor John Hamon, City Councilmembers Fred Strong, Steve Gregory, and Kris Beal joined community members, Parks and Recreation officials, and city staff to mark the start of construction. The event featured speeches, a ceremonial shovel dig, and recognition from Congressman Jimmy Panetta.

City Manager Chris Huot, Mayor Hamon, and Paso Robles Pickleball Ambassador Larry Werner shared remarks about the importance of the project before picking up gold shovels for the ceremonial groundbreaking. Diane Zannotti presented a proclamation from Congressman Panetta to Mayor Hamon, honoring the project’s impact on the city.

Once completed, Sherwood Park will feature seven new pickleball courts with lights, updated restrooms, shaded picnic areas with barbecues, and an expanded parking lot.

Public Input Shaped the Project Design

The improvement plan reflects input from local residents, especially pickleball players. During the ceremony, community members viewed project displays and learned how their voices shaped the development.

“The pickleball community was intimately involved in all aspects of the design process through the public outreach efforts that took place throughout the project’s development.” said Freda Berman, Public Works Director for the City of Paso Robles.

Berman also noted that the Public Works Department sends weekly updates on all capital projects. The progress of the pickleball court construction is shared with the City Council each month.

Park Upgrades Will Serve More Residents

Angelica Fortin, community services director for Paso Robles, said the upgrades will meet growing needs.

“Not only will the improvements help us meet the increasing demand for pickleball courts; but also, the additional amenities will go a long way towards better meeting the needs of all park users. Improvements will include a new barbecue area, updated restrooms, and a much-needed parking lot. Sherwood is one of our best used parks with baseball, soccer, and picnic gatherings taking place all year long.” – (Angelica Fortin)

The park will become the county’s largest public pickleball complex with lights. Lynda Plescia, Recreation Services Manager, highlighted this progress.

While Templeton Tennis Ranch has more courts, they are private. The new public courts at Sherwood Park will be open to all.

Citywide Impact Expected in 2026

The project is set to improve access to recreational spaces and create a stronger sense of community. Local players and families will benefit from the new courts and upgraded park features.

With construction now underway, Paso Robles looks ahead to a more active and inclusive park when the project finishes in 2026.
