Pickleball Courts at Reston’s Office Campus Lead Major Upgrade Plans

Pickleball Courts at Reston’s Office Campus: Reston’s Campus Commons office park is ready for some notable upgrades, including a unique addition for an office setting—pickleball courts. Property owner TF Cornerstone, based in New York, has requested Fairfax County’s approval to confirm that the planned amenity updates align with the current development guidelines.

The proposal includes enhancing the landscaping, adding more open space, and constructing two pickleball courts atop the parking garage at 1881 Campus Commons Drive. These courts, exclusively for employees, will provide an active recreational outlet amid the typical office environment.

Improved Pedestrian Access and Other Features

To improve accessibility to the new pickleball courts and parking garage, the developer plans to add a new crosswalk across Campus Commons Drive. Along with the courts, TF Cornerstone envisions making the area more connected by painting a “ribbon” on the surface parking lot. This painted design will visually link the main office buildings at 1900 and 1902 Campus Commons Drive to the parking garage.

“The painted ribbon facilitates a half-mile walking loop and will be stamped on the asphalt,” wrote LandDesign Director Jack Scanlon in a letter to the county on August 30. The ribbon is expected to add a touch of visual and functional enhancement to the area.

Expanded Landscaping and Amenity Spaces

In addition to pickleball, the proposal also seeks to replace some of the excess surface parking with enhanced landscaping and new amenity spaces. These upgrades could include furniture, seating areas, a turf area with cornhole, and shaded structures, creating a more inviting outdoor space for employees.

“The proposed interim improvements do not change or intensify the use of the property,” stated TF Cornerstone, ensuring the changes won’t affect stormwater drainage or disrupt the overall character of the office park.

A Development History and Future Plans

Campus Commons spans 18 acres with over 484,000 square feet of office space spread across three buildings, built in the mid-1980s. TF Cornerstone secured approval in 2019 for a large-scale mixed-use development on the property, which included plans for residential towers, a new office building, and seven public parks. However, progress on that redevelopment has yet to materialize.

The developer has previously faced challenges, including halting a planned pedestrian crossing for Wiehle Avenue due to lack of support, opting instead to provide the county with funds instead of the construction.

News in Brief: Pickleball Courts at Reston’s Office Campus

Reston’s Campus Commons office park is set for a refresh, including the addition of two pickleball courts for employee use. Property owner TF Cornerstone has proposed upgrades that include new landscaping, improved pedestrian access, and various amenity spaces.

The pickleball courts will be placed on the top level of a parking garage, with a half-mile walking loop connecting the campus buildings. The improvements are aimed at enhancing the office park without intensifying its use. Although TF Cornerstone received approval for a larger development in 2019, progress has been delayed.
