Caitlin Clark Says She’d Retire Before Giving Up This Dessert

Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever star, openly declared she would prefer retirement over giving up a dessert that NBA legend LeBron James recently avoided while preparing for the 2025-2026 season. Clark’s comment came in reaction to an ESPN Instagram post highlighting James’ decision to forgo his favorite chocolate chip cookies and wine as part of his injury recovery regimen earlier this year.

LeBron James, 41, shared on the show Mind the Game that during his 14-game absence at the start of his 23rd NBA season due to sciatica, he eliminated chocolate chip cookies and wine from his diet to aid his rehabilitation. This deliberate lifestyle adjustment, begun in early August and sustained through the end of the year, reflected his commitment to recovery.

James’ Injury and Dietary Changes for Recovery

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar missed games from the opening night of the 2025-26 campaign until his return on November 18, citing a right-side sciatic nerve injury. He explained to host Steve Nash,

“I wasn’t playing obviously as the season started, so I needed to give up something. I gotta sacrifice something — and I actually did two things that I love, that is drinking wine and my chocolate chip cookies for dessert.”

James emphasized that he completely removed these indulgences during this period.

Initially, James imposed the dessert and alcohol ban for November, but he extended the practice through December, further delaying his first drink and dessert until New Year’s Day.

“I kept going. I didn’t have my first drink and my first piece of dessert until New Year’s. New Year’s Day. So I ended up going basically two months,”

James recounted on the show.

Challenges of Giving Up Favorite Treats

While abstaining from chocolate chip cookies was difficult for James, the legendary athlete noted that avoiding wine also posed challenges amid the stress of injury. He admitted,

“Not playing, being a little stressed, I maybe wanted a glass here. A glass there,”

but acknowledged,

“it was good to give my body a break.”

Clark’s Affinity for Chocolate Chip Cookies

In contrast to James’ sacrifice, Caitlin Clark has publicly expressed a strong affection for chocolate chip cookies. During a press conference in May 2024, when asked to name an activity she enjoys that rivals her passion for basketball, Clark responded with a laugh,

“I like warm chocolate chip cookies, so I guess that… making those.”

This comment quickly became popular, illustrating her fondness for the dessert James gave up this past season.

Implications for Athletes’ Dietary Choices

LeBron James’ decision to forgo beloved treats like chocolate chip cookies and wine underscores the tough lifestyle sacrifices top athletes may undertake to maintain peak physical condition during critical periods. Caitlin Clark’s reaction highlights the personal importance such foods can hold, especially to players balancing intense careers and personal passions. As Clark hinted, the idea of giving up such desserts seems unthinkable, signaling how deeply these choices can affect athletes’ lives both on and off the court.
