Springdale Honors Marquesha Davis, New WNBA Champion

Springdale High School celebrated its alumna Marquesha Davis, the newest Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) champion, during the basketball game against Bentonville on February 24. Davis, a member of the New York Liberty‘s 2024 championship team, is recognized as the only Arkansas native to have won a WNBA title, marking a significant milestone for both her and the local community.

Reflecting on Early Development and Support

Marquesha Davis expressed deep gratitude for the support she received from the people of Arkansas throughout her journey. She credited her formative years at Springdale High with shaping her athletic skills and personal growth. Davis said,

“I think that’s where a lot of my development started,”

adding,

“I would say my time there helped me grow as a person and a player … Coach Hunsucker always stayed on me and she pushed me to be the best version of myself the coaches pushed me to be the best version of myself.”

Recognition from Springdale Basketball Coach

Springdale basketball coach Heather Hunsucker highlighted Davis’ outstanding high school career, recalling that she is the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. However, Hunsucker emphasized that the evening’s celebration focused on Davis’ achievements after graduating. She said,

“Marquesha had a historic career at SHS, including being our all-time leading scorer and rebounder,”

and added,

“She earned many awards and recognitions during her time at SHS, but tonight we are going to celebrate all she accomplished after graduating.”

Halftime Tribute Showcases Davis’ Journey

The homecoming event included a video tribute that traced Marquesha Davis’ progress from her high school days to her professional career. Davis described the honor as deeply meaningful, stating,

“It’s definitely a blessing to be able to come back and be honored by such great people and people that help you along the way to get to where I am today.”

Early Ambitions Realized Through College and Pro Success

Starting basketball at the Boys and Girls Club in third grade, Davis always dreamed of playing professionally. Her confidence in reaching that goal solidified in college, where she spent three years at Arkansas before transferring to Ole Miss. There, she led her team to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. This success propelled her to be selected in the first round as the 11th overall pick by the New York Liberty in the 2024 WNBA Draft.

Just months later, Davis and the Liberty clinched the 2024 WNBA Championship, fulfilling a lifelong aspiration. Reflecting on the achievement, she said,

“Everybody dreams of winning the championship. And all my life, I wanted to win a championship, even in high school, but I never got to that point. So just that being like, one of my long-term goals for the WNBA and for it to happen so fast in my career, it was just amazing.”

Inspiring Future Generations Despite Current Challenges

Marquesha Davis hopes her journey motivates aspiring athletes to pursue their ambitions with dedication. She shared,

“I hope that I can inspire them to, you know, be whatever it is that you want to be, you can accomplish as long as you put the work in, you stay determined, and it will all pay off long as you put the work in.”

Currently recovering from an injury, Davis is undergoing physical therapy to return to the court swiftly, demonstrating the same determination that propelled her to championship success.
