Elena Rybakina resumes her 2026 campaign this week at the Qatar Open, marking her first tournament since capturing the Australian Open title. The event represents the season’s inaugural WTA 1000 tournament, where Rybakina arrives as one of the favorites to claim the crown.
Ranked world number three, Rybakina holds the second seed position behind Iga Swiatek, especially after world number one Aryna Sabalenka opted not to participate. This circumstance presents a promising opportunity for Rybakina to add another significant trophy to her growing collection.
Rybakina’s Approach to Pressure and Preparation at the Qatar Open
Before her first match, Rybakina expressed a balanced mindset toward expectations at the Qatar Open. She emphasized that while she hopes to replicate her Australian Open success, she is aware of the long tennis calendar ahead and remains focused on continuous improvement.
“Hopefully this week is going to be as good as in Australia, but if not we have so many tournaments ahead, and there are big ones, so we’ll try to work on things and get good results,”
she said.
“I think the matches are the best practices also at the end of the day. So we’ll see how I’m going to feel here and how the matches will go. But again, it’s a good practice, no matter what. We still try to work on some things with the team.”
I don’t put too much pressure or expectations, that’s for sure. I definitely want to do well, and we’ll just see how it’s going to go day by day.

Rybakina’s Distinctive Mentality Compared to Her Top WTA Rivals
Rybakina’s calm and pragmatic approach contrasts with many other leading players on the WTA Tour. While her form has been impressive—highlighted by her recent Australian Open triumph and 2025 WTA Finals victory—several top competitors, including Jessica Pegula, Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys, and Iva Jovic, alongside Aryna Sabalenka, have chosen to skip the Qatar Open for rest or other reasons.

Rather than taking an extended break after Melbourne, Rybakina elected to maintain momentum by staying in competitive mode. This decision underscores her confidence and ambition during this phase of the season, as she looks to capitalize on her current form and add to her successful record.
Rybakina’s Career Achievements and Upcoming Challenges in the Tour
Since her first WTA title in Bucharest in 2019, Elena Rybakina has steadily built a strong career resume that includes a Wimbledon championship in 2022 and now a Grand Slam title from the Australian Open. Her recent win marked her 12th career tournament victory, cementing her status as a major force in women’s tennis.
Following the Qatar Open, Rybakina will compete in the Dubai tournament before traveling to the United States for the Sunshine Swing, which features consecutive WTA 1000 events at Indian Wells and Miami. These back-to-back tournaments will provide further opportunities for her to strengthen her ranking and prove consistency at the highest level.
The coming weeks will be critical for Rybakina as she attempts to build on her strong start to the year and continue her ascent within the sport, all while facing world-class rivals and rising competition across multiple premier events.
