Jeļena Ostapenko has progressed to the semifinals of the 2026 Qatar Open after a hard-fought quarterfinal victory. Following her win, she postponed her scheduled press conference by roughly ten minutes in order to watch the intense quarterfinal clash between Iga Świątek and Maria Sakkari, which featured the Greek player securing a narrow victory.
The top seed, Świątek, battled Sakkari in a thrilling three-set match in Doha, with Sakkari prevailing 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. This win marked Sakkari’s fourth triumph over former World No. 1 Świątek in their eight career meetings on the WTA Tour, underlining her growing dominance in their rivalry.
Ostapenko’s Journey Through the Qatar Open
Starting her campaign strongly, Ostapenko defeated Anastasia Zakharova in the opening round before overcoming eighth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round. She then continued her winning streak by beating qualifier Camila Osorio in the third round. Most recently, Ostapenko secured her quarterfinal spot by dispatching lucky loser Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Shortly after her victory over Cocciaretto, Ostapenko was set to address the media but delayed her press conference by about ten minutes while watching the Świątek-Sakkari quarterfinal. When she eventually spoke, the Latvian expressed that watching matches helps her recognize strategies and strong performances that she can learn from or apply in future encounters.

“Sometimes I really like to watch some matches because there’s some really great matches. Sometimes I am not in the mood to watch matches. So. when I watch matches, of course I analyze and I take some things what I can use against those players,” Ostapenko said.
Ostapenko’s Participation in Both Singles and Doubles
Besides her singles run, Ostapenko is making a deep impact in the doubles bracket at the Qatar Open. Partnering with Hsieh Su-wei, they hold the third seed and have reached the semifinals. Their upcoming match is against the top-seeded defending champions, the duo of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
Upcoming Semifinal Match: Ostapenko vs. Victoria Mboko
In the semifinals, Ostapenko will face 10th seed Victoria Mboko. Mboko’s impressive run in Doha has included victories over Marie Bouzkova in the opening round, then qualifier Vera Zvonareva, and fifth seed Mirra Andreeva in the subsequent rounds. Her quarterfinal win over second seed Elena Rybakina secured her spot to challenge Ostapenko.
This match will be the first-ever meeting between Ostapenko and Mboko on the WTA Tour. The winner will advance to play either Maria Sakkari or 14th seed Karolína Muchová in the final, emphasizing the high stakes and unpredictable nature of the tournament at this stage.
