Jessica Pegula has reached the semifinals for the seventh consecutive tournament, a feat accomplished despite her ongoing struggle with a chronic knee injury. The American achieved this milestone at the Dubai Tennis Championships by overcoming Clara Tauson in a three-set match, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
This performance extends Pegula’s streak of semifinal appearances since the 2025 US Open, demonstrating remarkable resilience and consistency amid physical challenges.
How Pegula Maintains Her Competitive Edge Amid Knee Pain
When questioned about her recent consistency, Pegula reflected candidly on her journey. She described a period of difficulty last summer during tournaments like Montreal and Cincinnati, where she was not performing well and struggled with frustration.
“Since last summer, I was working on a lot of things. I didn’t play well in – I don’t know where it was – Montreal, Cincinnati,”
Pegula said.
“I felt like I had a couple losses that I wasn’t playing well. I didn’t feel like myself. I didn’t feel like I was playing my game. I was kind of getting overly frustrated.”
She explained that this phase allowed her to identify necessary changes and improve her game under the guidance of her coaches. Pegula focused on reinforcing her strengths, enhancing efficiency, and improving her serve and movement despite a stubborn knee issue that has persisted for over a year.
“I think I’ve been serving a lot better. Physically been feeling good. Moving better again. I think I had a little bit of a chronic knee thing that’s been back and forth since probably over a year ago. That’s been feeling a lot better,”
she noted.
There’s a lot of things. But honestly been working on my game a lot. I think I’ve become a better player over the last six months.

Her recent form has produced three titles in 2025 alone, with victories in Bad Homburg, Charleston, and Austin. At 31 years of age, Pegula is nearing the milestone of 500 career wins, underscoring her status as a top competitor on the WTA Tour.

Assessing Upcoming Challenges at the Dubai Championships
Ranked fifth globally and seeded fourth in Dubai, Pegula faces a difficult path to the tournament title. The event has experienced numerous injuries and withdrawals, making the competition both unpredictable and demanding.
Following her quarterfinal win, Pegula awaited the semifinal opponent, uncertain whether she would face defending champion Mirra Andreeva or fellow American Amanda Anisimova, who were contesting a closely fought quarterfinal match.
Regarding both players, Pegula offered insights into their strengths and her history with them.
“Both are going to be really tough. I know Mirra obviously won this tournament, plays very well here. Is a great athlete, moves great. Really smart player, really good serve. Had a good start to the year, as well. That’s going to be tricky. We’ve also never played before, so that will be a little interesting,”
Pegula said.
She added about Anisimova,
“Amanda, opposite. Just played her in Australia. I’ve played her many times. We have had a lot of really close matches. It will be interesting to see.”
I think they’re going to have a good match. They both have been playing well. Yeah, just kind of gets tougher from here on out. Either way I’ll try to do my best to be ready.

Anisimova won their quarterfinal battle after a grueling three-set match lasting two hours and 38 minutes, defeating Andreeva 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(7-4). Pegula’s familiarity with Anisimova is extensive, having defeated her 6-2, 7-6(7-1) in the Australian Open quarterfinals earlier in the year, extending her perfect head-to-head record against her compatriot to 4-0.
Significance of Pegula’s Performance and Outlook
Jessica Pegula’s ability to maintain top-level results despite a persistent chronic knee injury highlights her determination and adaptability in a physically demanding sport. Her progress through the Dubai Tennis Championships not only boosts her ranking but also signals her readiness to contend for more titles.
As she approaches her 500th career victory, Pegula’s performance will be closely watched, especially considering her recent improvements and strategic adjustments made during her injury setbacks.
