During the Dubai Tennis Championships, Jessica Pegula discovered more about Iva Jovic, whom she previously described as her “mini-me.” The two Americans faced off in the round of 16, where Pegula noted before the match that it would be a challenging contest given their similar styles.
The 18-year-old Jovic put up a strong fight, testing Pegula’s skills throughout the game, but the more seasoned player eventually triumphed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Differences in Intensity and Focus Between Pegula and Jovic
After the match, Pegula elaborated on why she saw Jovic as a reflection of herself on the court, while also highlighting some clear distinctions in their approaches. She recognized that Jovic plays aggressively, like her, taking the ball early and effectively varying ball direction, especially off her backhand.
Pegula pointed out improvement in Jovic’s serve since they last trained together, acknowledging her growing skill level on the tour.
She observed,
“She’s definitely a little more intense than I am. She seems, like, so focused and routined in what she does. I’m probably maybe a little bit different in that.”
Expanding on the similarities, Pegula said,
“I can definitely see where changing the direction of the ball and taking it early – I mean, she’s not the only one that does it – but since she said she modeled it after me, I can definitely see that resemblance.”
Appreciating a Strong Competitor in Iva Jovic
Despite the disparity in their career stages, with Pegula inside the world’s top five and Jovic reaching a career-high ranking of 20, Pegula showed respect for the young competitor’s tenacity and skill.
Reflecting on the intense match, Pegula shared,
“Yeah, she’s a great competitor. I knew it didn’t really matter the score, that she was going to keep fighting no matter what.”
She credited her own improved serving and aggressive play for turning the tide after a tightly contested first set.

“I thought I started serving really, really well. I started winning a lot of points off my first serve. I felt her level dropped a little bit and I was kind of able to overpower a little bit,”
Pegula explained.
“Returned a little bit better, served a little bit better. I think I was just starting to win more free points really quickly, whereas in the first set I felt like it was very, very close.”
She added,
“Then I feel like I kind of took control of that set, especially in the middle of the set there when I went up 4-1.”
Looking Ahead: Pegula Advances to Dubai Semifinals
Following her win over Jovic and Clara Tauson, Pegula has reached the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she will face Amanda Anisimova. At 31 years old, Pegula is demonstrating remarkable consistency, having now made seven consecutive semifinal appearances.
The matchup promises another intense battle, as Pegula continues to assert her position among the world’s elite players while observing the rise of emerging talents like Iva Jovic on the WTA Tour.
