Emma Raducanu announced her split from coach Francisco Roig after their six-month collaboration ended shortly after the 2026 Australian Open. Although the former US Open champion has yet to appoint a full-time coach, she has recently been seen training with LTA coach Alexis Canter, indicating a possible interim arrangement as she navigates her next steps in coaching.
As Raducanu prepares to compete at Indian Wells, she provided an update on her coaching situation, revealing she is not actively seeking a new head coach at this time.
Raducanu’s Current Coaching Approach and Work with Alexis Canter
In an interview with The Guardian, Raducanu highlighted her current relationship with Alexis Canter, who has been supporting her on tour.
“Right now I wouldn’t say I’m actively looking for a coach,”
Raducanu said.
“Right now I have Alexis [Canter] in my corner. He knows me as a person. He knows me as a player. And I’ve actually had some success with him in the past year in Washington and Cluj.”
She credited Canter with understanding her strengths and helping her refine key fundamentals, emphasizing a focus on repetition and building a more aggressive style of play.
“I think I want to go back to that and [develop] a more aggressive style of playing,”
she added.
Raducanu Reflects on the Split with Francisco Roig
Raducanu spoke openly about her decision to end the partnership with Roig, appreciating their personal rapport but acknowledging a mismatch in key areas.
“I think I had a great experience with Francis [Roig] in terms of how we got on so well… the rapport was great,”
she explained.
“I think in the end, we just weren’t aligning on certain key aspects.”
Despite this, she stressed that their relationship remains positive:
“But we still maintain a really good relationship.”
Following the announcement, Raducanu shared a personal message to Roig on Instagram, expressing gratitude.
“Francis, thank you for our time together. You have been more than a coach to me, and I will cherish the many good times we spent on and off the court,”
she wrote.
“While we have come to the conclusion together that we ought not to move forward, please know that I am very grateful for all you have taught me and fond of our time shared.”
Raducanu’s Recent Performance and Tournament Results with Canter
The collaboration with Alexis Canter has produced some notable results in the past year. At the 2025 Washington Open, Raducanu secured wins over seeded players including Marta Kostyuk and Naomi Osaka, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to Anna Kalinskaya.

Her strong form continued at the 2026 Transylvania Open in Romania, where she reached the final for the first time since her breakthrough at the 2021 US Open. Raducanu defeated players such as Greet Minnen, Kaja Juvan, Maja Chwalinska, and Oleksandra Oliynykova before losing to Sorana Cirstea in the championship match.
Challenges in Maintaining Momentum Across Tournaments
Despite promising performances, Raducanu struggled to maintain consistency in subsequent events. At the Qatar Open, just two days after the Transylvania final, she retired in the deciding set against Camila Osorio due to illness, after winning the first set but losing the second.
Her following match at the Dubai tournament saw a tough loss against Croatian lucky loser Antonia Ruzic. Raducanu fought back after a heavy first-set defeat to win the second set 7-5, but Ruzic ultimately prevailed 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. This marked Raducanu’s third consecutive loss as she aimed to regain form before heading to the United States for the upcoming WTA 1000 events.
Upcoming Prospects at Indian Wells and Miami Open
Emma Raducanu will compete in the 2026 Indian Wells and Miami Open tournaments, two significant events collectively known as the “Sunshine Double.” Throughout her career, she has had moderate success at both venues but will be seeking improved results this year.
- Indian Wells record stands at 6 wins and 5 losses, with her best performance reaching the fourth round in 2023, where she fell to Iga Swiatek.
- At Miami Open, Raducanu holds a 4-3 win-loss record and reached the quarterfinals in 2025 before losing to Jessica Pegula.
The Indian Wells tournament is set to begin on Wednesday, March 4, representing an important opportunity for Raducanu to regain confidence and climb upward in the rankings.
Speculation Surrounding Future Coaching Choices
There has been speculation around who might take on a permanent coaching role with Raducanu. Some have suggested former British star Andy Murray could be a possibility following their partnership during the Transylvania Open final in Romania. However, Raducanu’s recent comments indicate she remains focused on working with Alexis Canter for now and is not pursuing a new coach actively.
Critics have noted Raducanu’s history of changing coaches frequently, which could pose challenges in establishing long-term coaching stability. While Canter has demonstrated positive results with her to date, the uncertainty surrounding her coaching future continues to create tension as she seeks to reestablish herself among the WTA elite.
The Road Ahead for Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu’s coaching update leaves her future direction uncertain but highlights a thoughtful, measured approach as she works through current challenges. As a player still adapting to the rigors of the professional circuit and building on early career success, the decisions she makes now could significantly influence her trajectory.
Her recent results demonstrate resilience and potential, but the pressure to regain her best form remains intense. With key tournaments on the horizon, including the high-profile Indian Wells and Miami Opens, Raducanu’s performances will be closely watched by fans and experts alike, eager to see if she can recapture the aggressive style and consistency that brought her a Grand Slam title.
