Born in Long Beach, California in 1991, Asia Muhammad launched her professional tennis career in 2008 at the Cincinnati Open. Reflecting on her journey, she credits a vital piece of advice from her coach Tim that shaped her mindset early on.
“The best piece of advice I’ve been given is to never lose the love for the sport and to remember why you started playing it. My coach Tim told me that when I was 11, and it stuck with me,”
Muhammad said.

Asia emphasized how playing doubles tennis fuels her enthusiasm for the sport. Sharing the court with a partner creates a unique sense of camaraderie that motivates her.
“Having a teammate just makes it so much fun. Knowing that we’re trying to accomplish the same things on court makes it really nice to have someone there with you,”
she noted, highlighting the joy teamwork brings.

Muhammad discussed her unusual yet meaningful pre-match habit of always using the same bathroom stall, which centers her focus and prepares her mentally. She visualizes key moments during a match to build confidence under pressure.
“I picture myself making certain plays in a pressure moment and being successful,”
she explained. She also appreciates the adrenaline of competitive nerves, saying,
“You don’t really get nerves like that in everyday life. That’s one reason why I love being an athlete,”
reflecting her passion and determination.

A standout memory for Muhammad took place in Toronto when she qualified for a major match and defeated Madison Keys. The win held deep significance for her career.
“After I won, I was really happy and cried. It was a huge win for me at that time,”
she recalled candidly, marking the moment as an emotional milestone.
Respect for Fellow Players and Close Bonds
Asia expressed admiration for several women on the WTA Tour, especially highlighting Taylor Townsend’s experience as a mother balancing tennis commitments.
“I will say Taylor Townsend just because she is a mother, and I know the struggles she has. It makes me emotional because leaving your son has to be so hard,”
Muhammad said. She also praised her close friend Erin Routliff, a recent US Open champion.

“She is one of my best friends on tour. We room together every week, and she believes in me so much. She’s at every single match,”

Growing up at the Andre Agassi Boys and Girls Club instilled values of resilience and generosity in Muhammad. She also credits the enduring encouragement from the Las Vegas tennis community for sustaining her motivation after each match. Describing women’s tennis in one word, she chose influential, further emphasizing its role as a source of empowerment.
“I just think all women tennis players are badasses, and anyone looking up to them will want to do the same thing,”
she stated confidently.
Current Status and Recent Performance
As of 2023, Asia Muhammad remains an active competitor on the WTA Tour. Her latest match took place on September 17, 2023, where she faced Leylah Annie Fernandez, ranked number 27, in Guadalajara’s first round, resulting in a 6-1, 6-3 loss. Throughout this season, Muhammad holds a match record of 16 wins and 14 losses, demonstrating persistence and ongoing dedication to her sport.
