During the 2020–21 season, he continued to excel, recording ten goals and ten assists in 21 games despite the season being shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He achieved his first career hat-trick on February 12, 2021, and was again named Hockey East Co-Player of the Month.

Breakthrough (2021–2023)

In June 2021, McDonough was appointed as an assistant captain for the 2021–22 season. He had a standout junior year, scoring 25 goals and 14 assists in 38 games, leading the Huskies in goals and ranking second in the NCAA. His performance earned him a place on the All-Hockey East First Team and recognition as an AHCA East First Team All-American. After announcing his return for his senior year in March 2022, he served as team captain in the 2022–23 season, leading the team with 20 goals and 38 points through 34 games. Following his collegiate career, McDonough signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks on March 13, 2023.
