Early Life and Background

Arber Xhekaj was born to Jack and Simona Xhekaj, with his father hailing from Drenas, Kosovo, and his mother from Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. Both parents emigrated to Canada in the 1990s due to political conflicts in their home countries. Growing up in Hamilton, Arber was exposed to ice hockey at a young age, playing minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies of Alliance Hockey. Despite his early passion for the sport, he faced challenges due to his comparatively slight frame and was not selected in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) 2017 Priority Selection draft, which he described as a tough experience. Encouraged by his parents, he continued to pursue his hockey career.

Path to Hockey

After his minor hockey experience, Arber Xhekaj played for the St. Catharines Falcons in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL). His performance caught the attention of the Kitchener Rangers, leading to an invitation to their training camp in 2018. Although he was not drafted in his second year of major junior eligibility, he made the team and played two seasons in the OHL. Following the cancellation of the 2020–21 OHL season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Xhekaj received a training camp invitation from the Montreal Canadiens before the 2021–22 NHL season. His impressive performance during training camp led to him signing a three-year, entry-level contract with the Canadiens on October 4, 2021, as an undrafted free agent.
