Brandon David Waddell (born June 3, 1994) is an American professional baseball pitcher in the New York Mets organization. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, and St. Louis Cardinals, in the KBO League for the Doosan Bears, and in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) for the Rakuten Monkeys. He made his MLB debut in 2020.

Early Life and Background

Brandon Waddell was born in Houston, Texas. He attended Clear Lake High School, where he began to develop his skills as a baseball player. Waddell later enrolled at the University of Virginia, where he played for the Virginia Cavaliers baseball team. During his time at Virginia, he contributed significantly to the team’s success, including pitching in the deciding game of the 2015 College World Series, which they won. He graduated with a degree in economics in just three years and was admitted to the master’s program in the School of Education and Human Development at Virginia.

Path to Baseball

Waddell was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He signed with the Pirates, receiving a $315,000 signing bonus. He made his professional debut with the West Virginia Black Bears in the Low-A New York-Penn League, where he spent the entire season.
