In the 2025 season, Smith became one of two replacement closers for the Guardians after Emmanuel Clase was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave. During this time, Smith emerged as Cleveland’s primary closer, achieving a 6–2 record with a 2.79 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 30 games.
