Cal Paul Quantrill (born February 10, 1995) is a Canadian professional baseball pitcher who is currently a free agent. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Diego Padres, Cleveland Indians / Guardians, Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, Atlanta Braves, and Texas Rangers. A first-round pick in the 2016 MLB draft, Quantrill made his major league debut with the Padres in 2019 and went on to spend several seasons as a starting pitcher in the American League.
Early Life and Background
Cal Paul Quantrill was born on February 10, 1995, in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in a baseball household, with his father Paul Quantrill enjoying a 14-season career in Major League Baseball. The family connection to professional baseball gave Cal an early appreciation for the routine and discipline required at the highest level of the sport.
Quantrill attended Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, where he was a four-time varsity letterman in baseball. He also lettered in hockey and volleyball, reflecting the well-rounded athletic environment of his high school years. His performance on the mound drew national attention, and he was selected by the New York Yankees in the 26th round of the 2013 MLB draft, though he did not sign with the club.
Path to Baseball
Following high school, Quantrill chose to attend Stanford University to play college baseball for the Stanford Cardinal. The San Diego Padres selected Quantrill with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2016 MLB draft. After signing, the Padres assigned him to the Arizona Padres, then promoted him to the Tri-City Dust Devils and the Fort Wayne TinCaps during the summer. He finished the 2016 season with a combined 0–5 record and a 5.11 ERA across 12 starts in rookie and short-season ball, and he also appeared in the Padres’ Futures Game.
In 2017, Quantrill split the year between the San Antonio Missions and the Lake Elsinore Storm, posting a combined 7–10 record with a 3.80 ERA in 22 starts. He opened 2018 with San Antonio before a midseason promotion to the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate. San Diego Padres (2019–2020)
Quantrill made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres on May 1, 2019, allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings pitched. He was optioned to El Paso shortly after recording his first major league win on May 25 in Toronto. During the shortened 2020 season, he appeared in 10 games for the Padres and went 2–0 before being included in a major late-summer trade.
On August 31, 2020, the Padres traded Quantrill, along with Austin Hedges, Josh Naylor, and minor league players Gabriel Arias, Owen Miller, and Joey Cantillo, to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for Mike Clevinger, Greg Allen, and Matt Waldron. In 2021, his first full season as a starter, Quantrill went 8–2 with a 2.89 ERA in 149 2/3 innings and a 1.176 WHIP, establishing himself as a reliable mid-rotation arm. The following season, he produced his strongest campaign to date, going 15–5 with a 3.38 ERA in 186 1/3 innings and a 1.208 WHIP. On September 9, 2025, Quantrill signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.
