Casey Arthur Mize (born May 1, 1997) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was selected by the Tigers with the first overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft. He played college baseball for the Auburn Tigers. In 2025, Mize was named to his first All-Star game.
Early Life and Background
Casey Mize was born in Springville, Alabama, where he attended Springville High School. During his high school career, he achieved a remarkable record of 19 wins and 2 losses. Mize committed to Auburn University to play college baseball, where he would further develop his skills and showcase his talent on a larger stage.
Path to Baseball
Mize’s collegiate career began in 2016 when he appeared in 16 games for the Auburn Tigers, starting 7 of those games. He finished his freshman season with a record of 2 wins and 5 losses, along with a 3.52 earned run average (ERA) and 59 strikeouts. His performance earned him a spot on the collegiate summer baseball team, the Wareham Gatemen, in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Mize’s sophomore year in 2017 saw him excel further, as he posted an impressive 8 wins and 2 losses with a 2.04 ERA and 109 strikeouts. His success led to him being named Auburn’s opening day starter for the 2018 season, where he threw a no-hitter against the Northeastern Huskies on March 9, 2018.

Casey Mize was drafted by the Detroit Tigers as the first overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft. He signed with the Tigers on June 25, 2018, receiving a signing bonus of $7.5 million. Mize made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Tigers in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He was later promoted to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, where he compiled a combined record of 0 wins and 1 loss with a 3.95 ERA in five starts before being shut down for the remainder of the season due to an innings limit. In 2020, Mize made his major league debut on August 19 against the Chicago White Sox, throwing 73 pitches over 4 and 1/3 innings.
Breakthrough (2021–2025)
In the 2021 season, Mize established himself in the Tigers’ starting rotation. He earned his first major league win on April 12, 2021, against the Houston Astros, throwing seven scoreless innings. Mize made 30 starts that season, finishing with a record of 7 wins and 9 losses and a 3.71 ERA. However, the 2022 season was challenging for Mize, as he was placed on the injured list with a right elbow sprain and later underwent Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. Mize returned to the Tigers’ rotation in 2024, making 16 starts before being placed on the injured list again. In 2025, he made a strong comeback, posting a record of 14 wins and 6 losses with a 3.87 ERA and earning a spot in the All-Star game.
