Early Life and Background

Casey Mize was born in Springville, Alabama, where he attended Springville High School. During his high school career, he achieved a remarkable record of 19 wins and 2 losses. Mize committed to Auburn University to play college baseball, where he would further develop his skills and showcase his talent on a larger stage.

Path to Baseball

Mize’s collegiate career began in 2016 when he appeared in 16 games for the Auburn Tigers, starting 7 of those games. He finished his freshman season with a record of 2 wins and 5 losses, along with a 3.52 earned run average (ERA) and 59 strikeouts. His performance earned him a spot on the collegiate summer baseball team, the Wareham Gatemen, in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Casey Mize was drafted by the Detroit Tigers as the first overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft. He signed with the Tigers on June 25, 2018, receiving a signing bonus of $7.5 million. Mize made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Tigers in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He was later promoted to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, where he compiled a combined record of 0 wins and 1 loss with a 3.95 ERA in five starts before being shut down for the remainder of the season due to an innings limit. In 2020, Mize made his major league debut on August 19 against the Chicago White Sox, throwing 73 pitches over 4 and 1/3 innings.
