Keider Montero’s Spring Confidence Fuels Tigers’ Bold Push

TAMPA, Fla. — Keider Montero arrives at spring training with a remarkable playoff record that has heightened expectations for the right-handed pitcher from Venezuela. Over five postseason appearances in 2024 and 2025, Montero has delivered 8 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run, surrendering just two hits while facing 30 batters. This successful stretch indicates he remains unfazed as he begins the current spring season with the Detroit Tigers.

His early outing on Saturday against the New York Yankees, however, carried more weight than a typical spring start. The 25-year-old is vying for a spot on Detroit’s Opening Day roster and preparing to represent his country in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, adding pressure to perform well and build momentum.

Spring Debut Highlights Challenges and Growth

Montero pitched two innings during the Tigers’ spring opener, yielding three runs on three hits, including a towering solo home run by Yankees prospect Spencer Jones. Despite this, he kept a positive outlook.

Honestly, for the first day, I felt pretty good,

Montero said afterward in Spanish.

But when you leave a pitch in the middle of the plate, the result is the home run that he hit off me.

— Keider Montero, Pitcher

Montero’s path over the past two seasons involved frequent movement between Triple-A Toledo and the Detroit big league club. Yet, the Tigers consistently called on him in critical moments late in the regular seasons and during the playoffs, demonstrating their trust in his abilities when it counts most.

Confidence Driven by Opportunity and Resilience

Montero views the ups and downs of his last two years as part of a larger journey. He embraces the motivation those call-ups provided, pushing him to make the most of each chance.

I think everything is part of a process,

Montero explained.

At the beginning of the year, they moved me up and down a lot. That’s part of the process. Every time they called me up, it motivated me even more to come back and earn another opportunity. And every time they gave me the opportunity, I tried to take advantage of it 100 percent.

When they gave me the opportunity in the postseason, I felt really confident, more than I had felt all year. My confidence was at 1,000 percent, not just 100 percent.

Physical Preparation and Manager’s Recognition

Montero’s physical condition this spring reflects his dedication. Although visibly slimmer, he clarified he shed only about eight pounds, all from his midsection.

I trimmed down my stomach a little and worked on that. I focused on reducing my stomach a bit and trying to add more up top,

he shared.

This change was motivated by both performance and appearance, as Montero expressed dissatisfaction with how he looked on television.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch took note of Montero’s offseason commitment and hard work.

He took the offseason seriously,

Hinch said.

He is laser-focused on being his best. He’s prepping for a very important spring for him. He’s a contributor in so many different ways, and the way he goes about it is very consistent. It looks like he didn’t waste a day in the winter getting ready for this opportunity.

— A.J. Hinch, Detroit Tigers Manager

Role Flexibility as Tigers’ Rotation Locks In

While Montero is being stretched out to start games during spring, his eventual role may depend on team needs. The Tigers’ five-man rotation currently includes Tarik Skubal, Framber Valdez, Jack Flaherty, Justin Verlander, and Casey Mize. Drew Anderson, Troy Melton, and Montero are considered next in line if a position opens.

Anderson’s guaranteed contract secures his roster spot, but the situations of Melton and Montero are less certain, with both players possibly starting in Triple-A Toledo or shifting toward bullpen duties.

Montero remains open-minded about his role.

My preference is to be in the big leagues,

he stated.

I don’t care what the role is, whether it’s in the bullpen or as a starter.

— Keider Montero, Pitcher

World Baseball Classic Adds Importance to Spring

Representing Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic next month weighs heavily on Montero, fueling his motivation this spring.

It’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid,

Montero said.

I feel very happy to be able to represent my country.

— Keider Montero, Pitcher

This international honor underscores how crucial this spring training is for him, as he strives both to solidify his standing with the Tigers and prepare for competition on the global stage.
