Tarik Skubal Says Tigers Never Made Contract Offer

Tarik Skubal disclosed that the Detroit Tigers did not present him with a formal contract offer during the offseason, leaving his future with the team uncertain. Despite his exceptional performance as one of baseball’s top pitchers, Skubal indicated the Tigers have withheld any long-term deal, which puts him on track to enter free agency after the upcoming season.

“There is no offer, and there won’t be an offer until the end of the season,”

Skubal told USA Today.

“My focus is on playing baseball and winning this year. I’ll deal with the contract stuff at the end of the year, and then we’ll kind of see. And that’s fine. It’s their decision.”

Background on Negotiations and Team’s Position

Skubal noted that during last year’s arbitration, the Tigers did not engage in negotiations with him, even as he secured a record $32 million contract through the process. Detroit’s only previous long-term offer came two years ago but fell well short of the pitcher’s valuation, with reported gaps between the sides reaching approximately $250 million.

Team owner Chris Ilitch refrained from providing clarity on Skubal’s contract situation, offering a vague response earlier this week:

“let’s see how it all plays out”

. Ilitch also emphasized the front office’s objective to make prudent decisions, saying,

“I would say (Tigers general manager) Scott Harris is always looking to make smart baseball decisions,”

and

“I hope it’s clear I want to support our team to make sure that we are a championship-caliber organization.”

Detroit’s Strong Pitching Rotation and Skubal’s Season Focus

This offseason, the Tigers bolstered their pitching staff by signing Framber Valdez to a three-year, $115 million contract and bringing back former ace Justin Verlander on a cost-effective one-year deal. Along with Jack Flaherty and Casey Mize, these pitchers create one of the most formidable rotations in Major League Baseball.

Reflecting on these additions, Skubal said to USA Today,

“That’s where my focus is, trying to win a World Series for the city of Detroit, the team that drafted me in 2018,”

and continued,

“The Tigers fans are excited, they’re really invested in this club, and so are we. There’s a different energy in camp this year about the guys that we brought in and additions that we’ve made, and there’s a true belief and trying to win a World Series.”

Individual Achievements and International Play

Skubal, aiming to become the first American League pitcher to win three consecutive Cy Young awards, has led the league in ERA in both 2024 (2.39) and 2025 (2.21), while consistently recording over 220 strikeouts each season. His elite performance has positioned him among the top pitchers in baseball.

In addition to his MLB commitment, Skubal is slated to pitch for Team USA during the World Baseball Classic, starting his appearance against Great Britain before returning for spring training. Despite his personal success and international participation, the Tigers’s lack of a contract offer suggests this season may be Skubal’s final year with Detroit.

Implications for Skubal and the Tigers Moving Forward

The absence of a current contract offer signals a critical crossroads for both Skubal and the Tigers. With a rotation strengthened by high-profile pitchers like Valdez, Verlander, Flaherty, and Mize, Detroit is positioned as a competitive team aiming for postseason success. However, the unresolved contract situation raises questions about the franchise’s long-term pitching strategy.

Skubal’s focus remains steadfast on contributing to a championship-caliber club while postponing contract negotiations until season’s end. How Detroit addresses his contract status after 2026 could significantly affect their pitching depth and playoff aspirations in the coming years.
