Claire Catherine Hutton (born January 11, 2006) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a defensive midfielder for the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the United States national team. Hutton signed with the Current at age 17 in 2023. In 2025, she helped the club win the NWSL Shield and was named to the NWSL Best XI First Team. Hutton won bronze medals as a youth international at the 2023 Pan American Games and the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup before making her senior debut in 2025.

Early Life and Background

Claire Hutton grew up in Bethlehem, New York, as the daughter of Jennifer and Brett Hutton. She has two brothers and began playing soccer at the age of four. At nine years old, she joined the Alleycats Soccer Club, where she played up several age groups and trained with boys’ teams. Hutton later moved to the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) club World Class FC, where she earned two-time All-American honors. Hutton starred on the varsity girls’ team at Bethlehem Central High School while still in middle school. In seventh grade, she helped lead her team to the 2018 state final and earned all-state honors. The following year, she scored a school-record 36 goals and made 19 assists, leading her team to defend its sectional title and being named the New York state player of the year for 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and youth national team call-ups, her playing time decreased in high school. In 2022, as a junior, she joined the Bethlehem varsity boys’ team, starting at forward and scoring four goals with one assist in 14 games. Hutton graduated from high school one year early in 2023.

Path to Soccer

Following her high school graduation, Hutton trained with NWSL teams North Carolina Courage and NJ/NY Gotham FC. Although she was initially committed to play college soccer at the University of North Carolina, the New Jersey club suggested she consider turning professional instead. After several months of consideration, she tried out with the Kansas City Current, where she signed a three-year deal through the NWSL’s Under-18 Entry Mechanism on December 14, 2023. Hutton made her professional debut on March 18, 2024, playing the full 90 minutes in a 5–4 win against the Portland Thorns, as the Current inaugurated the newly built CPKC Stadium. She quickly impressed as a critical part of head coach Vlatko Andonovski’s midfield. Hutton made her first professional assist on May 25, setting up Elizabeth Ball in a 1–0 win against the Utah Royals. On August 1, she scored her first professional goal from the edge of the box, concluding a 4–1 win against Tigres in the Summer Cup group stage. Hutton played in 22 regular-season games in 2024, starting 19, as the Current placed fourth in the standings. Despite being away for a month at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, she ranked fourth on the team with over 1,600 minutes played. In the playoffs, she started both games as the Current won 1–0 against the North Carolina Courage in the quarterfinals but lost 3–2 to the Orlando Pride in the semifinals. She was nominated for NWSL Rookie of the Year but lost to Croix Bethune. Hutton made 25 appearances, starting 22, and played over 1,800 minutes in 2025, helping the Current win the NWSL Shield with the best record in the league. The team set multiple NWSL records, including most points, most wins, and fewest goals allowed in a season. In the playoffs, Hutton played the entire extra-time match as the Current were upset 2–1 by Gotham FC in the quarterfinals. She was one of five finalists for NWSL Midfielder of the Year and was named to the NWSL Best XI First Team alongside several teammates.
