Known for their community engagement, Gotham FC has built a passionate fan base anchored by the supporters group Cloud 9.

Founding and Organizational Origins

Sky Blue FC was originally founded in 2006 as Jersey Sky Blue, entering the USL W-League in 2007 as a semi-professional outfit in the second tier of American women’s soccer. Future New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and his wife Tammy Murphy were co-founders of the team, alongside businessman Steven H. Temares, Francesco Prandoni, and Thomas Hofstetter. The Murphys later stated that their motivation in establishing the club was to set an example for their daughter and to demonstrate that there was a viable professional pathway for women in the United States.

By September 2007, the club had been chosen to fill the New York/New Jersey slot in Women’s Professional Soccer and rebranded as Sky Blue FC. Co-founder Thomas Hofstetter served as president of Sky Blue FC until 2013 and also chaired a feeder team that retained the Jersey Sky Blue name. The Murphys and their partners built the club’s early operational structure by recruiting experienced administrators, building out coaching staff, and assembling scouting networks to prepare for entry into a fully professional league. As of 2018, Phil Murphy held the position of majority shareholder.

The organization named Ian Sawyers as its first head coach and general manager on March 5, 2008, and the team was officially unveiled under the Sky Blue FC name on September 9, 2008. Within a week, the U.S. women’s national team allocation assigned Heather O’Reilly, Natasha Kai, and Christie Pearce to the club, providing a strong foundation of talent heading into the inaugural WPS season.

Growth Into NWSL Competition

Following the suspension of the 2012 WPS season, Sky Blue FC was announced in November 2012 as one of eight founding clubs of a new women’s professional soccer league backed by the United States Soccer Federation, the Canadian Soccer Association, and the Mexican Football Federation. That league, the National Women’s Soccer League, began play in spring 2013, with Sky Blue FC serving as one of its cornerstones.

The club entered the NWSL allocated seven players from North American federations, including Kelley O’Hara, Jillian Loyden, Christie Rampone, and Sophie Schmidt. On June 1, 2013, Sky Blue became the first team in NWSL history to score five goals in a single match, defeating the Boston Breakers 5-1 at Yurcak Field, and the club finished the season in fourth place before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Over the following years, Sky Blue FC navigated coaching changes, roster turnover, and off-field challenges, including widely reported training and housing issues. Following a major investment and management overhaul, the club rebranded as NJ/NY Gotham FC in April 2021. High-profile minority investments followed, including Carli Lloyd in April 2022, Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman via Thirty Five Ventures in May 2022, Sue Bird in July 2022, and Eli Manning and Pete Guelli in August 2022.

Gotham FC Competitive Journey

Gotham FC has progressed from a semi-professional W-League side to a championship-winning NWSL powerhouse, claiming titles in 2009, 2023, and 2025. The club has experienced both triumphant highs and difficult rebuilding years, with the modern era defined by professionalized operations, star-studded ownership, and a winning culture established under head coach Juan Carlos Amorós.

Early Seasons and Development (2006-2012)

Sky Blue FC kicked off its inaugural WPS season on April 5, 2009, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Los Angeles Sol at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater Township, New Jersey, before moving to Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University. The team struggled early, and head coach Ian Sawyers was relieved of his duties on May 28, 2009. Kelly Lindsey was named interim head coach and later installed permanently, only to resign abruptly on July 30, 2009.

Christie Rampone then became the third head coach of the year and the first player-manager in WPS history, guiding Sky Blue FC to the 2009 WPS Championship on August 22, 2009, with Heather O’Reilly’s 16th-minute goal defeating the Los Angeles Sol at The Home Depot Center. The victory was widely viewed as an upset and later described as an all-time underdog story, and the team was invited to the White House by President Barack Obama. Subsequent years brought coaching changes, missed playoffs, and the eventual suspension of the 2012 WPS season, after which Sky Blue FC transitioned into the new NWSL.

Breakthrough in NWSL (2013-2020)

The 2013 NWSL season saw Sky Blue FC finish in fourth place and qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2009, recording the first five-goal match in league history in a 5-1 win over the Boston Breakers. The 2014 and 2015 seasons were difficult, with the club failing to qualify for the playoffs, but standout players emerged, including Sam Kerr, who debuted in 2015 and became a focal point of the team.

Sam Kerr had a breakout 2017 campaign, becoming the first player in NWSL history to score four goals in one game during a 5-4 comeback win over the Seattle Reign on August 19, 2017. Kerr set a single-season scoring record with 17 goals, won the Golden Boot, and was named the 2017 NWSL MVP. Despite this, the 2018 season saw Sky Blue finish last with a 1-17-6 record, setting the NWSL record for the longest winless streak at 23 games.

Off-field problems dominated headlines, with reports of inadequate training facilities, housing issues, and player dissatisfaction. Following significant investment and the arrival of General Manager Alyse LaHue and minority owner Ed Nalbandian, the club overhauled its roster and culture entering 2020, only for the COVID-19 pandemic to disrupt momentum. Sky Blue still reached the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup semifinal, where goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan earned the Golden Glove award.

Modern Program and Current Direction (2021-Present)

In April 2021, Sky Blue officially rebranded as NJ/NY Gotham FC, with the new name drawing on the famous nickname for New York City. Under the new identity, the club brought in marquee players and minority investors, including NBA star Kevin Durant, WNBA legend Sue Bird, and NFL icon Eli Manning, raising the franchise’s valuation to an estimated $40 million by August 2022. After finishing the 2022 season in last place, Gotham FC appointed Juan Carlos Amorós as head coach in preparation for a transformative 2023 campaign.

The 2023 season produced Gotham FC’s first NWSL Championship, with the club defeating OL Reign 2-1 on November 11, 2023, on first-half goals from Lynn Williams and Esther González. In 2024, Gotham finished third in the league and advanced to the NWSL semifinals, where they fell to the Washington Spirit in a penalty shootout. On May 24, 2025, Gotham won the inaugural CONCACAF W Champions Cup, defeating Tigres UANL 1-0 in the final, and on November 22, 2025, the club won the 2025 NWSL Championship, defeating the Washington Spirit 1-0 at PayPal Park in San Jose, California, with Rose Lavelle scoring the winner and earning MVP honors.
