Katherine Nicole Stengel was born in Melbourne, Florida, United States. She attended Viera High School in Viera, Florida, where she began to develop her skills in soccer. Following high school, Stengel continued her education and athletic career at Wake Forest University from 2010 to 2013. During her time at Wake Forest, she played for the Demon Deacons women’s soccer team and completed her college career as the highest-scoring player in Wake Forest history, netting 50 goals in 75 games. Stengel was recognized for her talent, earning four All-ACC honors and three All-America selections, becoming the first Wake Forest player to be named first-team All-America in 2011.

Stengel’s professional career began in 2013 when she joined the Los Angeles Blues of the USL W-League. In June 2014, she made a significant move to Bayern Munich, where she contributed to the team’s success by scoring nine goals during the 2014–15 season, helping Bayern win the Frauen-Bundesliga title.
