After concluding the NFL season with a disappointing 6-11 record and missing the playoffs for the first time in ten years, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a major setback with ACL and MCL tears in Week 15. As Mahomes focuses on rehabilitation, he is determined to return by Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. Alongside his recovery, Mahomes and his wife Brittany are making significant moves with the Kansas City Current in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Brittany Mahomes, a former soccer player, is a founding co-owner of the KC Current together with Chris and Angie Long. Patrick Mahomes became a co-owner in January 2023. The Current dominated the NWSL regular season this year, securing the NWSL Shield faster than any other team and finishing as the league’s top-ranked squad, while setting multiple league records.
Record-Breaking Season Highlights and Unexpected Playoff Exit
The KC Current set new marks across the league by scoring the highest number of points (65), achieving the most wins (21) and shutouts (16), and maintaining the longest streak of consecutive shutout minutes (869). They also recorded the most multi-goal victories (15). Despite these accomplishments, they were surprisingly eliminated in the quarterfinals by eighth-seeded Gotham FC, a major upset given their status as favorites to win the championship.

In response to this setback, the franchise executed bold roster changes in early February, aiming to strengthen the squad for upcoming challenges.
Major Trade Sends Claire Hutton to Bay FC for $1.1 Million Transfer Fee
The KC Current shocked supporters by trading midfielder Claire Hutton to Bay FC in exchange for $1.1 million in intra-league transfer funds, making it one of the largest transfer fees ever recorded in the NWSL. The move sparked strong reactions from fans, many expressing disbelief and frustration on social media.
This just pissed me off WHY 😭.

So we’ve decided we just don’t want to win any games next year? What is going on?
— Concerned supporter
At just 20 years old, Hutton earned a spot on the NWSL Best XI First Team and has appeared for the U.S. national team, marking her as a key player for the Current.
Croix Bethune Joins Current as Dynamic Playmaker
The Current acquired midfielder Croix Bethune from the Washington Spirit as part of the trade. The Spirit secured a club-record $100,000 in allocation funds along with $900,000 in transfer threshold funds, reportedly the third-largest return in NWSL history. Bethune, honored as both the 2024 Midfielder of the Year and Rookie of the Year, represents an exciting asset for Kansas City.
“[She] is an exceptional playmaker with limitless potential,”
— Ryan Dell, KC Current General Manager
“Her elite creativity and passing ability combined with her tactical versatility – plus her resilience and passion – make her a great fit for our club, on and off the pitch.”
— Ryan Dell, KC Current General Manager
The Current are set to face the San Diego Wave at the Coachella Valley Invitational on February 15 as they begin integrating their new roster.
Ongoing Commitment from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes Fuels Kansas City Current’s Rise
While the season did not conclude with a championship trophy, the KC Current’s trajectory remains promising. Since their first game in 2021, the team has grown rapidly in value and reputation, now ranking as the second-most valuable franchise in the NWSL at $275 million, despite representing one of the league’s smaller markets.
In March 2024, the team celebrated the opening of CPKC Stadium, the nation’s first premier sports venue constructed primarily for a women’s sports team. Forbes reported that the KC Current led the league with $36 million in revenue generated in 2024.
Looking ahead, the Long family has committed a $52 million investment to expand team facilities in Riverside, Missouri. The plan includes a new Riverside Stadium, a 35,000-square-foot performance center, and additional pitch expansions. Construction began in July and promises to support the Current’s ambitions for sustained success and growth.
