He attended Bingham High School in South Jordan, Utah, where he not only excelled in football but also played basketball for the Miners athletic teams. During his senior year, Schultz caught 31 passes for 512 yards and nine touchdowns, showcasing his talent early on. Over his high school career, he accumulated 76 receptions for 1,120 yards and 12 touchdowns, which led him to commit to play college football for the Stanford Cardinal in January 2014.
Path to American Football
Schultz accepted a football scholarship from Stanford University, where he began his collegiate career. He did not see any action as a true freshman in 2014 and was redshirted. As a redshirt freshman in 2015, Schultz played in all 14 games as a backup to Austin Hooper, catching 10 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. By his sophomore year in 2016, he became the starter after Hooper declared for the NFL Draft, recording 23 receptions for 222 yards and a touchdown. Dalton Schultz was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round (137th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. He was brought in to improve the depth at tight end following the retirements of Jason Witten and James Hanna. Initially, he served as the third-string tight end behind Geoff Swaim and Blake Jarwin. After Swaim was injured in Week 11, Schultz stepped up, starting seven of the 11 games he played that season and contributing to the team’s running game. During his first season, he recorded 12 receptions for 116 yards.
Breakthrough (2020-2021)
Schultz’s breakthrough came in the 2020 season when he became the starting tight end after Blake Jarwin suffered a season-ending injury.
