Devin Carter was born on March 18, 2002, in Miami, Florida. He initially attended Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colorado, but transferred to Doral Academy Preparatory School in Doral, Florida, after his freshman year. This move was prompted by his father’s hiring as a player development coach for the Miami Heat. Carter’s senior season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, leading him to enroll at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, for a postgraduate year. During his time at Doral Academy, he was rated a three-star recruit and committed to play college basketball for the University of South Carolina during his senior year.

On December 13, 2021, he was named SEC Freshman of the Week after leading his team to a victory over Florida State University with a career-high 16 points and 7 rebounds.
