Gabe Levin was born on August 2, 1994, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, and is of Jewish heritage. Levin is the son of Mary Jo and Hillel Levin and has two brothers and two sisters. His brother Aaron played basketball at Grinnell College and is currently an assistant coach for the school’s basketball team. Levin stands 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 230 pounds.

Levin attended Oak Park and River Forest High School, where he had an impressive senior year, averaging almost 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He was recognized as a fourth-team All-State selection by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and made the ESPN Chicago All-Area Team. Following high school, Levin spent a year at St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, Connecticut, for post-graduate studies, where he earned First-Team All-New England Preparatory School Athletic Council honors. He then attended Loyola Marymount University, where he played for the Loyola Marymount Lions and averaged 11.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during the 2013-2014 season. Levin was named to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team in 2014. After redshirting in the 2014-2015 season, he transferred to California State University, Long Beach, where he played from 2015 to 2018.
