Hakanpää began his professional career in 2011 with the Espoo Blues in the SM-liiga, where he played for two seasons. After completing his entry-level deal with the Blues, Hakanpää returned to Finland, signing a two-year contract with Oulun Kärpät on 2 July 2015. He had a standout season in 2017–18, helping Oulun Kärpät win the Kanada-malja as Finnish champions. He posted 6 goals and 24 points in 58 games, showcasing his two-way game with 7 points in 16 playoff appearances. The following season, he led Liiga defensemen in Plus-minus and tied for second among league defensemen with a career-best 11 goals.

Later, he signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Stars, where he had his first multi-point game and recorded a total of 12 points in the 2021–22 season. Following his tenure with the Stars, Hakanpää was reported to have signed a two-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on 2 July 2024, but due to injury concerns, the contract was delayed. He officially signed a one-year contract with the Maple Leafs on 11 September 2024.
