John Carlson is an American professional ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Capitals in the first round, 27th overall, in the 2008 NHL entry draft after playing a year in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Indiana Ice. Before reaching the NHL, Carlson played junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the London Knights and played professionally with the Capitals’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hershey Bears. He also participated internationally for the United States in the 2010 World Juniors and 2014 Winter Olympics. Carlson won the Stanley Cup as a member of the Capitals in 2018, as the highest-scoring defenseman during the playoffs.
Early Life and Background
John Carlson was born on January 10, 1990, in Natick, Massachusetts, to Richard Carlson and Angela Dalle-Molle. He is of Swedish descent on his father’s side. The family of four lived in Marlborough, Massachusetts, where Carlson learned to skate, until his father accepted a job in New Jersey when John was around five years old. After the move, Carlson and his brother Andrew played junior hockey for the New Jersey Rockets in the Atlantic Youth Hockey League. In his freshman year at St. Joseph High School, Carlson played for both the varsity team and the Rockets during the 2004–05 season. He recorded 12 goals and 19 points, helping lead the team to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Sweet 16 tournament.
Path to Hockey
Carlson dedicated his sophomore and junior years to the Rockets, where he scored 50 points in 44 games during the 2006–07 season, earning the Atlantic Junior Hockey League Offensive Defenseman of the Year Award. His performance caught the attention of NHL scouts, leading to his transfer to Cathedral High School in Indianapolis for his senior year to play with the Indiana Ice in the USHL. As a 17-year-old, Carlson played 59 games with the Ice, recording 12 goals and 43 points, and was named to the USHL’s 2007–08 Second All-Star Team and All-Rookie Team. He was drafted by the London Knights in the 2008 OHL draft but chose to play for them instead of attending college.

Early Career (2009–2010)
After being drafted 27th overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2008 NHL entry draft, Carlson participated in the Capitals training camp and played in two preseason games before joining the Knights for the 2008–09 season. He signed an entry-level contract with the Capitals on November 13, 2008, after scoring four goals and ten assists in his first twelve games. Carlson’s defensive play helped the Knights hold a strong record, and he was named the OHL Rookie of the Month for December. He finished the regular season with 16 goals and 60 assists. After the Knights were eliminated from the playoffs, he was reassigned to the Hershey Bears for the 2009 Calder Cup playoffs, making his professional debut and scoring his first professional goal.
Breakthrough (2010–2018)
Carlson made his NHL debut on November 20, 2009, against the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the youngest player to debut with the Capitals since Alexander Semin in 2003. He played 22 games that season, scoring six points. He signed a six-year, $23.8 million contract extension with the Capitals before the 2012–13 season.
