Justin Danforth (born March 15, 1993) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who is a forward for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL). He won the ECHL Rookie of the Year in 2018 with the Cincinnati Cyclones. Prior to turning professional, Danforth played four years at Sacred Heart University where he received several accolades, including being honored as AHA Rookie of the Year and being selected for multiple All-Star teams. Internationally, he has represented Canada at various levels, winning gold at the 2021 IIHF World Championship.
Early Life and Background
Justin Danforth was born in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. He began skating at the age of four and played hockey around his hometown through the Oshawa Minor Hockey Association, where he developed his foundational skills. Danforth faced challenges early in his career due to his height, standing at 5 feet 8 inches as a youth, which led to doubts about his ability to compete at higher levels. However, he persevered and continued to pursue his passion for hockey. After finishing his Midget AAA years with the Oshawa Minor Generals, he played in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) with the Cobourg Cougars starting in the 2009–10 season.
Path to Hockey
During his time in the OJHL, Danforth made a significant impact, participating in the Central Canada Cup in 2012, where he led the OJHL East Division All-Star Team to a tournament title and was named tournament MVP. His performance earned him recognition, and he was named to the OJHL Second All-Star Team at the conclusion of the 2013–14 season. On June 3, 2013, Danforth committed to play NCAA Division 1 ice hockey for Sacred Heart University while studying sports management. Early Career (2017–2018)
After graduating from Sacred Heart University, Danforth signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Reading Royals of the ECHL. He quickly transitioned to the American Hockey League (AHL), signing with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and later the Rochester Americans. During the 2017–18 season, he moved between the AHL and ECHL, leading all rookies in the ECHL with 37 points and earning a spot on Team Central at the ECHL All-Star Game. His outstanding performance led to him being named ECHL Rookie of the Year at the conclusion of the season.
Breakthrough (2021–Present)
Following his success in the ECHL, Danforth left North America to join Lukko in the Finnish Liiga, where he excelled and was named an alternate captain. He later signed a one-year contract with HC Vityaz in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), leading his team in scoring during the 2020–21 season. After three successful seasons abroad, Danforth returned to North America and signed his first NHL contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets on May 3, 2021. He made his NHL debut on November 15, 2021, and scored his first NHL goal on November 19, 2021, becoming the first NHL player from Sacred Heart University.
