Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and winger Zach Benson, both sidelined by injuries before the Olympic break, are close to resuming practice, according to coach Lindy Ruff. Luukkonen, who missed the Milano Cortina Games due to a lower-body injury, skated independently on Wednesday ahead of the team’s first session after the break, signaling that a return is imminent.
He’s within days of joining us,
Ruff said after the workout at LECOM Harborcenter.
Benson was scheduled for another evaluation on Wednesday to determine if he could participate in practice on Thursday.
Jordan Greenway Attempts a New Approach to Injury Treatment
Meanwhile, winger Jordan Greenway, dealing with ongoing pain following two hernia surgeries, has begun trying a different medical treatment after a recent consultation with his doctor. Greenway did not take part in Wednesday’s practice.
He’ll be out a period of time,
Ruff stated.
And if that works, he can get back. I really won’t put any time frame on it right now.
Additional Player Injury Updates and Recoveries
Center Josh Norris and forward Josh Dunne both worked out on Wednesday in a non-contact capacity. Dunne had not skated with the team since his last game on January 12. If their progress continues positively, Ruff anticipates they will soon return to full-contact practice sessions.
Jiri Kulich, who has been sidelined since November 1 due to blood clot complications, remains under close supervision and will undergo another assessment in early March.
That should be where he’s able to progress or we’ve got to keep him where he’s at,
Ruff explained.
He’s been skating but when you’re dealing with a blood clot, there’s protocol you’ve got to follow.
Skating has resumed for winger Justin Danforth, recovering from a broken kneecap suffered on October 15, and defenseman Conor Timmins, who broke his leg on December 18.
Implications for the Sabres’ Roster and Upcoming Season
The progress of key players like Luukkonen, Benson, and Greenway will play a crucial role in shaping the Sabres’ lineup going forward. The cautious approach with injuries underscores the team’s focus on long-term health and performance. Continued medical evaluations and treatments are expected to guide the timing of each player’s return, which could impact the Sabres’ prospects for the remainder of the season.
