Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (born 9 March 1999) is a Finnish professional ice hockey player who serves as a goaltender for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Sabres as the 54th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. Luukkonen has made significant contributions to his team with remarkable performances, including multiple shutouts and being regarded as a standout goaltender in the league. Throughout his career, he has also represented Finland in various international competitions.
Early Life and Background
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was born in Espoo, Finland, and grew up in Hyvinkää. His father, Jari Luukkonen, is the Secretary General at the World Wildlife Fund-Finland. Luukkonen was named after the nickname of former Finnish president Pehr Evind Svinhufvud. As a child, he played football, floorball, and the flute, and he also participated in ice hockey with the Hyvinkään Jää-Ahmat junior squad. Luukkonen idolized Finnish goaltenders Miikka Kiprusoff and Tuukka Rask during his formative years. He has a twin brother, Jaakko, who played football before becoming an engineer, and an older brother, Nuutti, who was a junior-level goaltender and later became a pilot.
Path to Hockey
Luukkonen began his junior career with HPK, where he played for their under-16, under-18, and under-20 teams, as well as for LeKi of Mestis on loan. After an impressive performance with HPK’s under-20 team, he was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2017 NHL Draft. Luukkonen was also selected in the 2016 KHL Junior Draft by Severstal Cherepovets. On 15 June 2018, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Sabres and was selected third overall by the Sudbury Wolves in the 2018 CHL Import Draft. During the 2018–19 season, Luukkonen set the Sudbury Wolves franchise record for most wins in a regular season, leading the Ontario Hockey League in wins, save percentage, and shutouts. He became the first European import player to win the Red Tilson Trophy as the league’s most outstanding player.

Early Career (2017–2019)
Luukkonen made his professional debut on 12 April 2019, signing an amateur tryout contract with the Rochester Americans, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Sabres. He earned a victory in his debut against the Belleville Senators. Following the 2018–19 season, Luukkonen underwent successful hip surgery, which sidelined him for part of the following season. He returned to form with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL, where he was named ECHL Goaltender of the Month for November 2019 and represented the team at the ECHL All-Star Game.
Breakthrough (2021–2023)
Luukkonen made his NHL debut on 23 April 2021, recording his first NHL win against the Boston Bruins. He played four games for the Sabres in the 2021 season, but most of the season was spent with the Americans. The 2022–23 season saw Luukkonen called up to the Sabres due to injuries to other goaltenders. He had standout performances, including a 41-save game against the Vegas Golden Knights, and was named NHL Rookie of the Month in January 2023. Luukkonen recorded his first NHL shutout on 29 October 2023, in a 4–0 win over the Colorado Avalanche. He continued to perform well throughout the season, achieving multiple shutouts and leading the league in save percentage and goals against average during key stretches.
