Mallie Elizabeth McKenzie (born November 13, 2000) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a defender for Portland Thorns FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). She played college soccer for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Early Life and Background
Mallie Elizabeth McKenzie was born in Roswell, Georgia. She attended Roswell High School, where she set the school record for all-time goals scored. McKenzie played youth soccer for UFA Milton after joining the team in eighth grade and helped lead Milton to three Georgia State Cup championships. She was recognized as the 2018 7A Player of the Year and was named to the All-Region Team throughout her high school career.
In addition to soccer, McKenzie also ran track during her senior year and was a letterwinner in cross-country. In 2019, she achieved a commendable third place at the Georgia 7A state championship in the 800 meters, showcasing her athletic versatility.
Path to Soccer
Following her high school career, Mallie McKenzie attended the University of Georgia, where she played for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2019 to 2023. During her time with the Bulldogs, she scored her first collegiate goal on September 9, 2021, in a 5–1 victory over Presbyterian. McKenzie played a pivotal role in her senior year, contributing to her team’s first NCAA appearance in eight years, although they were eliminated in the second round by North Carolina.
In her final year, the University of Georgia won both the SEC East season title and the SEC Championship for the first time in the program’s history. She also played a crucial role in the semifinal game, scoring a goal and providing an assist. McKenzie began her professional career with Portland Thorns FC in 2024 after a successful collegiate tenure. Initially, she was not included in the Thorns’ 2024 preseason roster. However, due to key international absences, she was added to the squad as a non-roster invitee for the Coachella Invitational Tournament. On March 21, 2024, McKenzie signed her first professional contract with the Thorns, marking the beginning of her professional soccer journey.
