He attended Santa Clara University from 2016 to 2021, initially majoring in finance before switching to marketing in graduate school. During his time at Santa Clara, McCarty earned three All-West Coast Conference honors and showcased his talent by reaching the quarterfinals at the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball alongside his teammate Derek Ackerman, finishing with a remarkable 13-under-par 128 in stroke play, the best in the field.
