He attended Tracy High School in Tracy, California, where he was a two-way starter for four years on the Bulldogs football team. Overton earned several accolades, including Lineman of the Year and athlete of the month awards. Despite his achievements, he did not receive any scholarship offers after high school and chose to attend Diablo Valley College, a junior college in Pleasant Hill, California. Overton’s time at Diablo Valley College was marked by success, as he earned Special Teams MVP and Team Captain honors.

After his successful stint at Diablo Valley College, Matthew Overton transferred to Western Washington University. At Western Washington, he continued to excel, serving as a team captain and becoming a two-year starter at defensive end and long snapper.
