Michael Dominic DeShields is an American professional soccer player who plays as a defender. He currently plays for USL League One side Charlotte Independence. Born on April 23, 1998, in Baltimore, Maryland, DeShields has built a career across Major League Soccer organizations and lower-division American clubs.
A product of the Baltimore Celtic academy and Wake Forest University, DeShields rose to national attention as a high school standout before being selected fifth overall in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United. Standing at 1.85 meters (6 ft 1 in), he has spent his professional years competing in USL Championship, USL League One, and briefly with the D.C. United organization.
Early Life and Background
Michael Dominic DeShields was born on April 23, 1998, in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the son of Michael DeShields and Jeanette Gibbs, and he is the oldest of their four children. Growing up in the Baltimore area placed him near a strong youth soccer culture that helped shape his early development.
DeShields attended the McDonogh School, a private school in Owings Mills, Maryland, where he played varsity soccer. In 2015, he captained the team through a 21-0-1 season that ended with the MIAA Class A State Championship. His leadership and performance that year earned him the Maryland Boys’ Soccer Gatorade Player of the Year award.
Outside of high school, DeShields also trained with the Baltimore Celtic academy, one of the top youth soccer programs in the region. After graduating from McDonogh, he went on to attend Wake Forest University, where he majored in Communications and continued his playing career with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons from 2018 to 2020.
Path to Soccer
DeShields’ path to professional soccer began with his standout high school career at McDonogh, where he led the program to an unbeaten state championship. The Gatorade recognition in 2015 helped establish him as one of the top youth defenders in Maryland. His time with Baltimore Celtic gave him additional exposure to high-level competition.
At Wake Forest, DeShields developed as a college defender in the ACC, a conference known for producing professional talent. During his college years, he also gained summer experience with USL League Two side Treasure Coast Tritons in 2019, giving him a first taste of senior-level matches while still in school.
His combination of high school accolades, academy training, and college performance at Wake Forest positioned him for the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. D.C. United selected him in the first round with the fifth overall pick, making him one of the highest-drafted defenders from that year’s class.

Early Career (2019–2020)
DeShields’ first senior-level experience came in 2019, when he appeared for Treasure Coast Tritons in USL League Two. That summer stint gave him a sample of professional-style soccer while he continued his studies at Wake Forest University.
He returned to college play for the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, refining his defensive game. On November 30, 2020, while still finishing his college career, he signed a contract with New England Revolution II of USL League One, though the season had already concluded and he did not appear on their roster.
MLS SuperDraft and D.C. United Era (2021)
DeShields entered the 2021 MLS SuperDraft out of Wake Forest and was selected in the first round with the fifth overall pick by D.C. United. Under league rules, D.C. United had to either extend him a contract offer or see his rights default back to Revolution II. On February 5, 2021, he officially signed with D.C. United.
He did not feature for the senior D.C. United roster that season, instead being loaned to their USL Championship affiliate Loudoun United. On May 18, 2021, DeShields made his professional debut as a halftime substitute for Loudoun United in a 2–1 loss to New York Red Bulls II. His first start came on May 29, 2021, in a 1–0 win over New Mexico United. Following the 2021 season, D.C. United released him.
New England Revolution II (2022)
On February 4, 2022, DeShields rejoined New England Revolution II ahead of their inaugural MLS Next Pro season. He spent the year competing at that level and working to secure a longer-term role with the organization. Following the 2022 season, however, his option was declined by New England, sending him back into the open market.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Hartford Athletic (2023–2024)
On February 28, 2023, DeShields signed with USL Championship side Pittsburgh Riverhounds, moving up a division after his season in MLS Next Pro. He played for the Riverhounds through the first half of 2024, but opportunities were limited during that stretch.
On June 19, 2024, he joined fellow USL Championship club Hartford Athletic in search of more playing time. The midseason move gave him a fresh environment to compete for minutes and continue his professional development in the second tier of American soccer.
Charlotte Independence Era (2025–Present)
On February 20, 2024, DeShields signed with USL League One side Charlotte Independence, returning to the third tier of American professional soccer. The move came as he sought consistent minutes and a more prominent role on a smaller roster. He has since featured for Charlotte in the USL League One season.
