Michael Lamar Porter Jr. is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born on June 29, 1998, in Indianapolis, Indiana, he played college basketball at the University of Missouri. Porter was highly recruited and selected as the 14th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets. He achieved his first NBA championship in 2023 while with the Nuggets.
Early Life and Background
Michael Porter Jr. attended Father Tolton Regional Catholic High School in Columbia, Missouri, before transferring to Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Washington, for his senior year. His father, Michael Porter Sr., was hired by the University of Washington to be an assistant coach, and former NBA player Brandon Roy was the coach of Nathan Hale’s basketball team. In Porter’s junior season at Father Tolton, he led the team to the 3A State Championship. In the summer of 2016, Porter joined Mokan Elite on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL), averaging 26.2 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, leading them to the Nike EYBL Peach Jam championship and earning Co-MVP honors alongside future NBA player Trae Young. In his senior season, Porter averaged 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds, helping his high school team achieve a perfect 29–0 record and win the Washington Class 3A State Championship. He recorded 52 points and 23 rebounds in a blowout victory over Seattle Prep on senior night. Porter was rated as a five-star recruit and ranked among the top overall recruits in his class by Rivals.com and ESPN. On March 29, 2017, Porter was named MVP at the McDonald’s All-American Game, leading the West team to victory.
Path to Basketball
In July 2016, Porter originally committed to the University of Washington. However, after his father was hired as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri, Porter decommitted and committed to play for Missouri on March 24, 2017. Unfortunately, Porter suffered a lower back injury during the season opener against Iowa State, which required surgery and sidelined him for most of the season. After a successful microdiscectomy, he returned to practice in February 2018 and played in the 2018 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. Following the tournament, Porter announced his intention to forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility and declared for the 2018 NBA Draft.

Early Career (2018–2020)
Michael Porter Jr. was selected with the 14th overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in the 2018 NBA Draft. Despite being projected as a potential first overall pick, concerns about his health led to his selection at 14. On July 3, 2018, Porter signed a multi-year contract with the Nuggets, but he missed the entire 2018–2019 season due to back surgery. He made his NBA debut on October 31, 2019, scoring 15 points in a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans. By December 29, 2019, he made his first career start, finishing with 19 points against the Sacramento Kings. On August 4, 2020, he led the Nuggets to their first victory in the Orlando bubble, scoring a career-high 37 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
