Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sergachev is a Russian professional ice hockey player who is a defenceman and alternate captain for the Utah Mammoth of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected ninth overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 NHL entry draft. Sergachev won the Stanley Cup back-to-back with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.
Early Life and Background
Mikhail Sergachev was born on 25 June 1998 in Nizhnekamsk, Russia. Growing up in a country with a rich hockey tradition, he was exposed to the sport from a young age. Path to Hockey
Sergachev began his junior career in Russia, playing for Irbis Kazan in the Molodezhnaya Hokkeinaya Liga (MHL). Early Career (2016–2017)
After being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, Sergachev made an immediate impact. He attended his first training camp and impressively made the opening night roster for the 2016–17 season. He made his NHL debut on 13 October 2016 in a victory over the Buffalo Sabres. However, he appeared in only four games before being returned to the Windsor Spitfires to continue his development. On 28 May 2017, he helped the Spitfires capture their third Memorial Cup championship.
Breakthrough (2017–2024)
On 15 June 2017, Sergachev was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Jonathan Drouin. He made his Lightning debut on 6 October 2017, recording his first career NHL assist and point. By 19 October, he scored his first two NHL goals against the Columbus Blue Jackets, making him the youngest Lightning defenceman to achieve a multi-goal game. Sergachev continued to excel, recording his first playoff goal on 21 April 2018, becoming the youngest player in Lightning history to do so. His contributions helped the Lightning secure back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.
