Early Life and Background

Nephi Sewell was born on December 19, 1998, in Malaeimi, American Samoa. He moved to the United States in 2012, where he attended Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah. Sewell’s early exposure to football came during his high school years, where he demonstrated his talent as a player. In his sophomore year, he recorded 48 tackles and five interceptions, showcasing his defensive skills. However, his junior season was cut short due to a serious injury, suffering a broken neck in his first game. Despite being told he may never play football again, Sewell’s determination led him to recover in time for his senior season, where he excelled as a running back, accumulating over 1,250 yards and scoring 16 touchdowns, ultimately helping his team win the state championship.

Path to American Football

After high school, Sewell committed to play college football at the University of Nevada in 2017. He made an immediate impact as a true freshman, being named the school’s player of the week in his debut after recording five tackles at safety. Over his first season, he played 12 games, starting eight, and finished with 58 tackles, one interception, and a forced fumble. In his sophomore year, he started 11 games and recorded 53 tackles, one interception, and another fumble recovery. Following the 2018 season, Sewell announced his intention to transfer, initially committing to Brigham Young University but ultimately transferring to the University of Utah. At Utah, he changed positions from safety to linebacker, where he continued to develop his skills.

Nephi Sewell went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft but was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent. He faced challenges during the roster cuts, being waived initially on August 30, 2022, but was re-signed to the practice squad shortly after. Sewell’s perseverance paid off when he was promoted to the active roster on November 10, 2022, making his NFL debut in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
