Patrick Bailey is an American professional baseball catcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played college baseball at North Carolina State University and was selected 13th overall by the Giants in the first round of the 2020 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2023.
Early Life and Background
Patrick Bailey was born on May 29, 1999, to Steve and Celeste Bailey in Greensboro, North Carolina. He attended Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina, where he played catcher for the baseball team. In 2016, he played for the U-18 United States national baseball team. During his senior year in 2017, he had an impressive batting average of .510 with 33 runs batted in (RBIs) over 96 at-bats. Although he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 37th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft, he opted to play college baseball at North Carolina State University.

Bailey’s college career began in 2018 at North Carolina State University, where he quickly made a name for himself. He had a stellar freshman year, batting .321 with 13 home runs, earning him the title of ACC Freshman of the Year and a spot on multiple All-American teams. In his sophomore year, he continued to excel, batting .288 and earning All-ACC First Team honors. His junior year was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he still managed to hit .296 in 17 games before the season ended.

Bailey was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the first round with the 13th overall pick of the 2020 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with the Giants for a signing bonus of $3.8 million. Due to the cancellation of the minor league season in 2020, he did not play any games that year. His professional debut came in 2021 with the Eugene Emeralds, where he struggled initially but improved significantly during the season. He ended the year with a strong performance in the Arizona Fall League, earning a spot in the Fall Stars Game. In 2022, he returned to Eugene and was named the 2022 MiLB Gold Glove as the best defensive catcher in the minor leagues.

Bailey made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants on May 19, 2023. He quickly made an impact, hitting his first major league home run just two days later.
