Early Life and Background

Paul Arriola was born in Chula Vista, California, a suburb of San Diego. He grew up in a family that supported his passion for soccer, and he attended Mater Dei Catholic High School in Chula Vista. Arriola also attended iHigh Virtual Academy in San Diego, which allowed him to balance his education with his burgeoning soccer career. Additionally, he holds a Mexican passport through his great-grandparents, which has provided him with opportunities in both American and Mexican soccer. Arriola began his soccer journey at a young age, participating in youth soccer programs. He spent time with the U.S. Soccer Development Academy club Arsenal FC, where he honed his skills before joining the academy of the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2013. In December 2012, Arriola was invited to train with Club Tijuana after previously trialing with the club. He made his debut for Tijuana in a preseason friendly against Club América in July 2013, scoring a goal in that match. Arriola’s career began with Club Tijuana, where he played from 2013 to 2017. During his time with Tijuana, he became known for his dynamic playing style and ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. His performances helped him gain recognition, leading to a transfer to D.C. United in Major League Soccer in August 2017 for a club record fee. At D.C. United, Arriola continued to develop his skills, making an immediate impact by scoring his first goal for the club in their final game at RFK Stadium. He ended his first season with D.C. United with 11 appearances, two assists, and one goal. His contributions grew in the following seasons, particularly in 2018, where he recorded seven goals and eight assists.

Breakthrough (2017–2021)

Arriola’s breakthrough came during his time at D.C. United, where he became a key player under head coach Ben Olsen. His versatility allowed him to play both as a right midfielder and right back, showcasing his adaptability on the field.
