Oluwasegun Olubi Bio
Oluwasegun Olubi is an American professional football linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the College of Idaho Coyotes, Saddleback Gauchos, Harding Bisons, and San Diego State Aztecs. He was signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2022.
Early Life and Background
Oluwasegun Olubi was born on November 1, 1999, in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. His family moved to New Jersey shortly after his birth, then to St. Paul, Minnesota, when he was two years old. Later, they relocated to Bullhead City, Arizona. At the age of ten, his family moved to London, England, before returning to Bullhead City and eventually settling in Corona, California. Olubi attended Centennial High School in Corona, where he was a three-year varsity letter winner in both football and track and field. In track, he achieved personal bests of 11.33 seconds in the 100 meters and 23.23 seconds in the 200 meters. He also recorded a long jump of 22 feet 3 inches and a school-record triple jump of 45 feet 11 inches. In football, he made 38 tackles, had one interception, and one pass breakup in his senior year, earning all-league honors. Olubi began his college career at the College of Idaho, where he played for the Coyotes, who compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In his only season there, he finished second on the team in tackles with 85, along with a half-sack, ten pass breakups, one forced fumble, and a blocked kick.
Path to American Football
After his time at the College of Idaho, Olubi transferred to Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California. During his single season at Saddleback, he led the team with 54 tackles, recorded two sacks, and had one interception. His journey was challenging, as he managed to support himself by working two jobs at Five Guys and In-N-Out while foraging for food. In 2019, he transferred to Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, but only played one season before leaving due to the discontinuation of his economics major. In that season, he appeared in 12 games, recording 23 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery. In 2020, Olubi joined San Diego State University as a walk-on after convincing the coaching staff of his potential. His first season with the Aztecs saw limited playing time, but he made a significant impact with a 71-yard interception return touchdown against Hawaii. He earned a scholarship prior to the 2021 season and was voted team captain by his teammates. In 2021, he played in 14 games, starting seven, and recorded 53 total tackles, two sacks, and two forced fumbles. He was nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the best player who began their college career as a walk-on.
