Shyheim Carter is an American professional football safety for the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League (UFL). He played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide and was signed by the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He has also been a member of the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans.
Early Life and Background
Shyheim Carter was born on December 15, 1997, in Kentwood, Louisiana. He attended Kentwood High School, where he played quarterback and cornerback. Carter was recognized as a four-star recruit and was considered one of the top prospects in the state of Louisiana. He earned first-team all-state honors during both his junior and senior years and was selected to participate in the Under Armour All-America Game. In his final two years, he was named the Class 1A Offensive MVP and led Kentwood to a state championship in 2015, showcasing his talents by throwing for 2,443 yards, rushing for 1,648 yards, and intercepting five passes. Carter was ranked by ESPN as the 40th-best player nationally, the 6th-best cornerback, and the 4th-best player in Louisiana. He initially committed to play college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide, later de-committing before reaffirming his commitment to the school.
Path to American Football
Carter began his college career at the University of Alabama in 2016. As a true freshman, he appeared in nine games and recorded seven tackles. Initially, he struggled with the playbook, but by his senior year, he became known as one of the most knowledgeable players on the team. In his sophomore season, he played all 14 games, contributing with seven tackles and a pass breakup. Carter became a starter in the 2018 season, where he totaled 44 tackles, 10 pass breakups, and two interceptions returned for touchdowns. His senior year in 2019 saw him record 43 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, and one interception. Over his college career, he appeared in 50 games, starting 23, and accumulated 101 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, 21 pass breakups, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

Early Career (2020)
After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, Shyheim Carter signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. His contract included $72,000 guaranteed, which was among the highest for the team’s undrafted signings. He was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list shortly after signing but was activated in mid-August. Unfortunately, he was waived on September 5, 2020. Later that year, on October 20, he was signed to the practice squad of the Atlanta Falcons but was waived on December 8, 2020.
Breakthrough (2021-2023)
In 2021, Carter signed with the Houston Texans after a successful minicamp tryout but faced challenges, being waived and re-signed to the practice squad multiple times throughout the season. He eventually joined the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad on December 30, 2021, and was signed to a reserve/future contract shortly after. Carter made his NFL debut during the 2023 season, appearing in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals and contributing with a tackle. He was released during the final roster cuts on August 29, 2023, but was re-signed to the practice squad the following day.
