Early Life and Background

Tanner Brown was born in Santa Clarita, California, where he grew up playing soccer before transitioning to football in high school. He attended Saugus High School, where he played both soccer and football. As a senior, he excelled as a placekicker, successfully converting 7 of 11 field goals and 16 of 18 extra points. Additionally, he showcased his punting skills, punting 37 times for a total of 1,242 yards in 2017. Brown graduated from high school in 2018. After high school, Tanner began his collegiate career at the College of the Canyons in 2018. He served as both a placekicker and punter, helping the team secure back-to-back division championships in 2018 and 2019. His performance earned him All-American honors and all-conference selections at both positions. He made 28 of 38 field goal attempts and converted 100 of 102 extra point attempts during his time at the college.

Path to American Football

In 2020, Tanner Brown transferred to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to play for the Rebels. He appeared in six games during a COVID-19-shortened season, contributing with 24 kickoffs and 12 punts. After one season at UNLV, he sought to transfer and was eventually able to join the Oklahoma State Cowboys as a walk-on. He quickly made an impact, taking over kickoff duties and serving as the team’s kicker for field goals and extra points. In his first season with the Cowboys, Brown was successful on all 36 of his extra point attempts and made 17 of 21 field goals, earning honorable mention all-conference honors. The following season, he was named team captain and became one of the top placekickers in the nation, converting 22 of 23 field goal attempts and all of his extra points. His impressive performance ranked him third in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for field goal percentage and earned him second-team All-Big 12 Conference honors, along with being a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, which is awarded to the best placekicker in college football.
