Toumani Camara is a Belgian professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Raised in Belgium, he moved to the United States to attend Chaminade–Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Florida. Camara started his college basketball career with the Georgia Bulldogs and then transferred to the Dayton Flyers after his sophomore season. He was selected in the 2023 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns and traded to the Trail Blazers before the start of his rookie season.

Early Life and Background

Toumani Camara was born on May 8, 2000, in Brussels, Belgium. He was raised by his mother, Anne Le Docte, who is of Belgian and Haitian descent, while his father is from Mali. Camara has an older brother and a sister who tragically passed away at three months old due to a lung ailment. To honor his family, Camara has four butterflies tattooed on his right leg, representing himself, his mother, his brother, and his sister. Camara’s interest in basketball was sparked by his brother, and he began playing at a local court that was often occupied by soccer players. His first exposure to American basketball came from watching the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament on Belgian television. He developed a passion for the sport and became a fan of Dwyane Wade while following the Miami Heat’s championship run. At 16, Camara moved to the United States to pursue his basketball dreams, attending Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Hollywood, Florida.

At Chaminade-Madonna, Camara excelled in basketball, averaging a double-double during his junior and senior seasons. His performance garnered attention from over 30 NCAA Division I schools. Camara ultimately chose to play for the University of Georgia, committing on October 1, 2018. During his freshman year, he averaged 6.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, sharing the court with future NBA star Anthony Edwards. Despite facing challenges in his sophomore season, Camara improved his performance, finishing with averages of 12.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Camara’s professional career began when he was drafted by the Phoenix Suns as the 52nd overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. He signed a four-year rookie scaled contract on July 3, 2023. Shortly after, on September 27, 2023, he was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a three-team deal involving several players, including Damian Lillard. Camara made his debut for the Trail Blazers on October 25, 2023, in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers, where he recorded seven points, one assist, and two rebounds.

Breakthrough (2024-2025)

In his rookie season, Camara faced challenges, including a fractured left rib and a kidney injury that cut his season short. Despite this, he averaged 7.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
