Phillips redshirted his first year at Mississippi State, a decision he later described as beneficial for his development. During his junior year, he played at both tackle positions as part of an offensive line rotation, and in his senior season, he started all 13 games for the Bulldogs. After the season, he showcased his skills at the 2020 Senior Bowl.
