Early Life and Background

Yosuah Hesdy Nijman was born on January 2, 1996, in Orange, New Jersey, to Surinamese parents. He grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, where he attended Columbia High School. At Columbia, Nijman played as an offensive tackle for the Columbia Cougars. He later spent a semester at Fork Union Military Academy, where he played as a strongside defensive end before graduating in 2015. Rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and 247Sports, he received offers from several universities, including Temple, Miami, and Virginia.

Path to American Football

The connections between Fork Union and Virginia Tech influenced Nijman to commit to Virginia Tech as early as 2014. Initially promised a position as a defensive lineman, he ultimately transitioned to the offensive line. During his freshman season in 2014, he played in 12 games as a reservist. In his sophomore season in 2015, he started all 14 games as the left tackle. However, injuries limited his playing time in his junior season, where he played only 9 out of 14 games. He returned for his senior season, but another injury caused him to miss the final three games. After completing his college career, Nijman entered the 2019 NFL Draft.
