Zachary Michael MacMath (born August 7, 1991) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a goalkeeper for Major League Soccer club Real Salt Lake. He was drafted No. 5 overall in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by the Philadelphia Union. He announced his retirement on November 7, 2025.
Early Life and Background
MacMath was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, to Marcia and Gary MacMath. He is of Jewish heritage, with his mother being Jewish and his father Catholic. MacMath practiced Judaism and had a Bar Mitzvah at Temple Beth El, a Reform synagogue in his hometown. He attended St. Petersburg High School during his freshman year before transferring to the IMG Soccer Academy in Bradenton, Florida. During his time in high school, he was recognized as a two-time Parade magazine High School All-American soccer goalkeeper.

Following his early education, MacMath attended the University of Maryland, where he served as the first-choice goalkeeper for three seasons. He made his first appearances as a starting goalkeeper in September 2011, stepping in due to an injury to the team’s starting keeper, Faryd Mondragon. Despite not making the playoffs in 2012, he continued to develop his skills, including a training stint with Everton during the MLS off-season.
Breakthrough (2015–2025)
In January 2015, MacMath was loaned to the Colorado Rapids for the 2015 season. After the season, his option was declined by Philadelphia, leading to a trade to Colorado in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. He continued to make an impact in the league, being traded to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in December 2018. The following year, Real Salt Lake acquired him from Vancouver, where he played until his retirement in 2025.
