Zachary Kenneth Werenski was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. His early exposure to hockey included participation in the 2009 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Detroit Belle Tire minor ice hockey team. He later trained with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program during the 2013–14 season, where he finished second among team defensemen in scoring with seven goals and 20 assists in 47 games, despite missing time due to injury. Werenski made his professional debut on April 1, 2016, with the Lake Erie Monsters, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. He scored his first professional goal on April 9, 2016, and played a pivotal role in leading the Monsters to their first Calder Cup championship during the 2016 Calder Cup playoffs. On October 13, 2016, he made his NHL debut for the Blue Jackets, scoring his first NHL point with an assist. Just two days later, he scored his first NHL goal against Martin Jones of the San Jose Sharks. His remarkable performance earned him the NHL’s Rookie of the Month award for November 2016.

Breakthrough (2017–2021)
